Riding the Rails: The Passenger Restaurant in Madrid

Somewhere between Carrie and Samantha's ill-fated train trip across the country on Sex and the City and a dream excursion aboard the Orient Express lies The Passenger, a rail travel inspired restaurant in the trendy Malasaña/Triball neighborhood of Madrid. According to Parolio, the restaurant's designers, it was the long, narrow space itself that first triggered the concept…

Like the Orient Express, the décor of The Passenger is replete with dark wood and polished brass. But unlike travelling aboard the famous luxury train, at The Passenger, the scenery only appears to be rushing by the windows. This illusion of movement is due to three "windows" onto which a stream of synchronized video is projected to give the impression of a view that flows from window to window. Parolio states that "the images have been recorded from train windows all over the world, presenting urban and nature landscapes that transport the clients into the fantastic experience of travel and leisure, pulling them away from the reality of the city around them."

A coffee bar by day and bar by night, the restaurant serves up masterful brews by "Toma Café" and then switches to cocktails fueled by classic rock at night. Photos of great rock stars in and around trains and stations line the walls and reinforce the musical element of the concept.

I'll admit, I'm intrigued. What do you think? Would you go? Have you gone? Do tell!
