We just heard the news that Steve Jobs has passed away. Only 56, he was uber successful, somewhat notorious and had an undeniable impact on the history of product and packaging design in America and around the globe.
Dieter Rams summed it up well when he said, I have always observed that good design can normally only emerge if there is a strong relationship between an entrepreneur and the head of design. At Apple this situation exists - between Steve Jobs and Jony Ive...Apple has managed to achieve what I never achieved: using the power of their products to persuade people to queue to buy them. For me, I had to queue to receive food at the end of World War II. That's quite a change.

He will be missed ~
The world has lost someone very special today.
we have all lost somebody who has greatly contributed to humanity. rip steve.
an innovator, visionary and a great inspiration to many like myself
Words fail me.
Very, very sad.
"...And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." —Apple
There are no words to express how much he will be missed. Some may "only" remember him as the guy who was once richer than the US but there are only few who will actually remember his legacy. Some may have the iPhone iPod MacBook pro..or another apple product, but they will never understand that this man rejected many other projects that were never to his prestige. He never released a product half way finished, he was proud of all his work. I'd it were not for him our computers would have never have icons or our phones have keyboards. The word 'smart' phone would have never existed. There would have been no google, Microsoft, or any other company to compete with their products.
A person will always be missed. But their legacy always remains. And that is what Steve jobs is for me.
He is a person I look up to. Not only for his accomplishments but his dedication.
Hard work and dedication.
Roxanna your facts are wrong. Jobs stole those "icons" from Xerox. And Microsoft was founded a year before Apple. Bill Gates had to bail Apple out in '97 if not for Microsoft, Apple would not be around.
But needless to say he was a great innovator RIP
And now the legacy begins...
FJS: Xerox was paid for a tour of their research facilities, and the right to developed based on what they saw. It wasn't theft, and the fact is a lot of things made at PARC would never have left that facility. A many things were preconceived at places like PARC, and never saw the light of day till someone else actually brought them to market.
"Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."
I am saying, rephrased, that Microsoft or Google, or any other company would have never been what it was with apple. apple created competition to the tech market. I am not arguing about when Google or Microsoft began. Life would be different with just Microsoft or Google. Apple changed Windows Basic. There is many things that inspire people to create things, and Steve Jobs has done that.
Steve Jobs was the Michael Jordan of the tech world. He changed the game, and made everybody else play beyond their ability. He didn't improve just technology, he improved our ability to imagine the possible.
