Q: I'm moving in a couple of weeks (Fort Greene, Brooklyn to Fort Greene, Brooklyn) and find myself in need of basically everything. I plan on buying a high-quality couch and a few other key pieces, but for the odd chair, etc I was thinking it would be great to get out of the city and see what some out-of-state flea markets have to offer. I'm sure there are places I could go where I would find some great vintage and mid-century pieces at a fraction of the price I would pay in the city.
Can you recommend anywhere? I'm looking online but not getting very far, and if I'm going to make a road trip out of it I'd love to have a solid recommendation.

If you can make it!
Lambertville NJ has a good one (golden nugget?) - but furniture is scarce these days
There are some nice pieces here and the prices seem fair. Not much in seating though-

Also, ABC Carpet has their big sale coming up

and he has some nice things from time to time-

when I used to work with a decorator, she used to take us to this place in Stamford, Ct. they have several buildings that carry different grades of antiques..mostly furnitures. I bought alot of pieces from there. You should negotiate the prices.

ABC Carpet just had a warehouse sale in NJ so i bought a nice french made rustic dining table and a headboard for terrific prices. If you sign up for their email, you get extra 15% off coupon mailed to your house which i took advantage of.
My favorite is the Elephant's Trunk:

I've gotten some great stuff there for next to nothing.
Stormville Flea Market.
Housing Works thrift shops (all over manhattan) have great buys at "Flea market" prices. They even have online auctions with new stuff added daily:

There are is also a strip of thrift shops running up 3rd Avenue from 77th to at least the mid 80's.

I second sunan's recommendation of The Golden Nugget in Lambertville, NJ. Outdoor vendors sell mostly housewares and collectibles with some furniture mixed in. Indoor vendors have more furniture. Definitely go on a Sunday and get there before noon (some vendors start packing up shortly after). You can make a day of it by driving into the town of Lambertville - more antique shops, boutiques, restaurants. It's my favorite day trip from NYC.
i think there's one in woodstock, NY every weekend. i've heard great things about it.
brimfield is great, if a little overwhelming, but you can see just about everything in 5-6 hours. it all starts to look the same after a while though, so you have to remain alert if you want a good find.
additionally there's a pottery barn, restoration hardware, and WS home outlet in riverhead, NY (long island) where you can find good deals on furniture. not flea market but a good place for bargains.
I think the prices at Housing Works are ridiculous.
the nice items at Housing Works never seem to be for sale to the general public.
try the thrifts in the East 20's in mn and on Atlantic Av in bk.
the streets also can reward (be careful of infestations). whatever you choose, have patience for it.
What do you mean never for sale to the general public? Everything is for sale there!
If you mean the stuff in their WINDOWS, that stuff they acution off on line. To anyone.
Rosaleen--
Seriously?? Where do you shop, then, less "ridiculous." And you *do* know it's a charity, right?
And yes, Kerry, read up on bedbugs before you plan on your all-thrift furniture extravaganza!
Stormville's OK. I understand there's a section in the Bronx that's interesting.
This barn sale look VERY promising. I'm planning the trip:

Interesting that you used a picture from Jayson Home and Garden (in Chicago) as to lead up a story on flea markets near NYC.
I highly recommend a trip to Stamford, CT. Take exit 7 off the 95. There are several antique warehouses. Most of their websites are way out of date, so you really need to go to see what they have. Here is a list from least expensive to more expensive. For the real down and out piece that you are willing to put some effort in to fix up, try John's Antiques. Super cheap prices, so the work can be worth it. Sometimes you hit the jackpot with a great item that is perfect as it. The other Stamford dealers shop there for new stock. Across the street is a favorite, Hiden Galleries. great stuff from all eras and not to $$$$. At around the same price point is the Antiques and Artisan's Gallery. Hamptons Antique Gallery mentioned above is some what more expensive. Habor View Antiques is at the top of the heap. Irwin Feld has mid century modern. He has some booths at Hiden plus a large gallery on Pacific Street. You can google all of these names for directions. I review a few in my blog. Have fun!! Lynn
There is a great place in farmington, ct, just two hours out of NYC that specializes in vintage lighting. Great stuff at half what you'd pay in manhattan. And they deliver for free.
It's called Old Lights On, oldlightson.com.
OH, do not go to Englishtown, it is seriously junk junk junk, and not the good kind. New junky toys, new clothes, tee shirts, packs of socks and underwear. I was 100% disappointed. Do not waste your time.
I live in Ohio and you can find almost anything you could imagine. My best friend buys all of her stuff here or in Columbus. If you can get out of New England you will find amazing deals. Search thrift stores, flea markets, and antique malls. Go to Pennsylvania, West Virginia, or Ohio. Good Luck.
I actually have had some good finds on Craigslist... I also found a super cute chair for free on the side of the road when I was walking my dog!
It wasn't in the best condition (matting and fabric), but the bones are fabulous, so I recovered it for about $30.
So if you find something that you like with good bones for a great deal, there are a lot of fun things you can do with it!
There's a really great sale next weekend in Westport, CT [May 21-24] called Leftover Luxuries. It's a new high end concept on the tag sale, every thing has been approved by the sale coordinator so all the crap is weeded out. You can see a lot of the items on facebook by searching for "Leftover Luxuries-Westport, CT and learn more about it at: http://leftoverluxuries.com/ I helped coordinate the sale so I know for one, there are some great items to be snatched up!
