Most paper towel rolls are stored on vertical, countertop holders. But, might it save a little counter space to use a wall-mounted version? this one from Rocky Mountain Hardware is pricey ($215), but nice and one of the only we've seen like this.

Mounted near the kitchen sink, this handy piece of hardware gets the paper towels up off the countertop and onto the wall. There are plenty of paper towel holders available that are open on one end. How about mounting them vertically instead of horizontally and saving yourself $200?
On the lighter wallet side, Ikea makes a vertical toilet paper holder (for multiple rolls) that could totally be used for paper towels! I've had one for ages but this post just now made me realize it could be used in the kitchen as well. Thanks!

i've got this paper towel holder here, except mine has black rubber, i think it also comes in green and blue. you can mount it vertically, and because of the rubber spines on it, its the one handed tear kind. it grips it just enough to give it a tub and tear a sheet off.

Anybody ever found one that's magnetic? My walls are hard to screw into, but my fridge is arm's reach from the sink.

I've had the magnetic one from ContainerStore. It doesn't hold with the larger rolls you get these days. If you're really stuck on getting one, I'd pull off the flat plastic magnet and replace it with some heavy duty rare earth magnets. Those are available online for much cheaper than the small packs you get in the store.
