When I first saw this photo in Vogue Living, I thought, "Oh, yes please!". But then I noticed how close those other buildings are. And then I saw the toilet...
According to Vogue Living writer Madeleine Hinchy, the bathroom's glorious 360-degree views of Tokyo don't create any issues for its users: "The neighbouring buildings are lower in height, but a white shower curtain offers extra privacy." However, in the photo you can see across to the neighbors' patios, which means they can see in. And there's certainly no white curtain around the toilet. Don't get me wrong: I think this project is gorgeous, and I'm super-jealous of the bath, shower, plants, and natural light. But the toilet...

Yikes !
Toilet next to the tub? Why the hell spend all that money to build a bathroom in such a special location, and then give it the same layout as a bathroom in a basement apartment?
I'm sure those leaves provide plenty of privacy ;-) i do think there is something for privacy that we just can't see. Maybe the windows are tinted so that you can see out but not in....
hell yes, but baba yaga hits the nail on the head. Bath should be slap bang in the middle of the space.
It looks like the curtain extends over to the toilet. Although it might only create privacy on the one side. Someone that would live here probably doesn't care about privacy anyway.
Even if the glass isn't tinted - there's no way that someone in the building a few blocks away could see who was doing what without use of binoculars, etc...
...and if someone's going to go to all that effort to look - Well, who cares?
This would be so lovely (privacy issues aside), except on days when I have a migraine!
Here's my question. If you have 360 degree views of Tokyo, *why* would you make that room a bathroom? A living room would provide a lot more time spent up there.
That said, if they already have a living room with 360 degree views, why NOT have a rooftop bathroom?
I might add some sort of toilet privacy, and totally agree with the layout problem, but I think it's gorgeous!
What about days when it's thunderstorming or snowing? That would scare me a little showering so close to the elements.
What everyone else said and... have fun going up the ladder in your bathrobe or other times to use the bathroom
In a dream world, yes! In the real world ruled by You-Tube and Facebook, no.
I'd enjoy the view, but I wouldn't want anyone to enjoy my "view" when using the tub or toilet...Too much of a "public" bathroom for me!
This brings to mind the Bible story of David and Bathsheba.
I have a little window in my shower, which satisfies my exhibitionist tendencies while keeping me relatively hidden from view.
The toilet is particularly odd, if only from a cultural perspective. I thought Japanese construction (even in the more private confines of an interior) often favored putting the toilet in a separate room as the bathtub.
If this were my space, I'd make it into more of a conservatory with tons of plants, and put a hot tub and maybe a couple of lounge chairs instead of a bathroom. Serves the same relaxing purpose but without the privacy concerns.
I actually love it. I don't think I'd mind the privacy, but I probably wouldn't turn the lights on at night.
God no!
I think it would be amazing to have a soaking bath at night and be able to see the night horizon. The stars are probably obscured by all the city lights so that won't be visible - but the feeling of the great expanse of sky above would be amazing.
I do think walking around your bathroom naked would be problematic in the long term however. Perhaps this is just a display bathroom and the real "workhorse" bathroom is below?
GIPE. Good Idea Poor Execution.
Another issue: Giant, expensive rooftop bathroom with a NORMAL-SIZED TUB. Really? Why not spring for the giant whirlpool tub for a jacuzzi-type experience?
My aunt has a bigger tub than this guy.
It's pretty, but I'd use this space for a room I'd spend more time in. And I'm guessing her neighbors can't see her, cuz if I had to see someone sitting on the toilet every time I went out to my patio, you better believe I'd be complaining.
maybe its like this bathroom: http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/strange-toilet-is-transparent-on-the-inside-but-opaque-to-others
