Color Inspiration: I've been carrying this beautiful vintage paper parasol from apartment to apartment because I love the colour - a beautiful coral, especially when the light shines through it. I hung it in my kitchen to hide...

Color Inspiration continued:...some gnarly junction boxes and slowly built my palette around it - bright and creamy coral, warm white, soft sage, pops of citrus.
Colors Used: Regrettably didn't save the paint chips.
Color Tip: Being brave, and willing to re-paint if it doesn't work out. I never consider paint much of a commitment and will try just about anything once. If you tire of it, you can spend $30 and an afternoon or two to try something new.
As far as mixing hues goes, I find keeping colours in a similar tonal family makes it easier. And a little contrast can be your best friend.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
Love it!
Beautiful! What's the wallpaper in the cabinets?
This kitchen is so charming and sunny and inviting. Great job! Looks like you have a lovely balcony, as well, where you've continued your coral palette. Love the two small still life paintings, the "TEA" letters in the window, the hardwood floor ... love the whole package!
So warm and welcoming! Thumbs up. Wallpaper (?) behind shelving is a nice touch.
Very charming! I also like the placement of the little table for extra counter space.
Wow. I have never seen a coral kitchen before. Now I want one!
Lovely! For some reason your kitchen reminds me of the one Bjork cooks the eggs in, in her video "Venus as a Boy."
yes, personality shines through!!
I love it and not just because Heather's my homie. I am so upset she didn't save the paint chips, though!
Very pretty!
Thanks guys! Heather here. It is indeed wallpaper - we ordered a sample at work and got a half roll so I figured I'd put it to use. Can't remember the company off the top of my head - it's a Spanish studio that silkscreens graffiti inspired designs.
Who is LaBelleProvince?
This is a great color combo - esp. since I never would have thought of something like this! I didn't think I liked coral. The 3rd pic with turquoise counter and the beautiful sage/white cabinet against the unlikely and stunning coral is fantastic.
sorry for the double post - but I think I just convinced my husband to paint the kids' bathroom this coral! We are trying to come up with a fun color over the white wainscoting that works with the (less fun) existing white/light blue floor tile. Why oh why didn't you save those swatches ;-)
This kitchen is AMAZING! You should see the rest of her apartment - it's just as rad.
Hey wigglebutt (hee hee) - I'll try to find you an equivalent tomorrow when the light is better and I can match it to some swatch books I have at the office. I know it was one of the Home Depot "house" colours.
strong contender. i admire the natural light alone
stunning!! And you haven't even had her beat burgers! Delicious!! Heather you are an inspiration.
Crikey, I never thought I could ever like an entire room like this! Fantastic. Would love to see a house tour.
I love this kitchen, and I like the surprising choice of coral-- it really works in the room!
Absolutely love this - and I love your colour philosophy too Heather. Would love to see a full house tour.
Adorable kitchen...love the color!
This is really beautiful. I love the cool contrasty wallpaper in the cabinets - counters the sweetness of the coral and green. Great job!
Excellent! I'm left with a nostalgic southern charm-y vibe. Must be the coral and tall ceilings. I want to sit on the porch there in the sunlight, and shell some beans from the garden for my supper!
What a great space to cook! Really charming and I adore your "island".
This is really lovely and so happy must be helpful on those brrrrrr cold Montreal days.
I think I am starting to really like orange.
perfect
Living here in Ottawa just want to pop down for tea in your lovely kitchen.
lovely!
So nice to see it bathed in sun with autumn leaves peeking through the window. I've only had the pleasure of an evening visit, and my memory is of an entirely different colour palette - that of borscht and cabbage rolls.
The Charles & Dianna lunchbox should be enough to win over voters, but the warm and serene mood you've created here is miles ahead of the competition. The current front-runner provokes a near epileptic seizure in me, while your entry makes me want to linger at your island, thumb cookbooks, gossip, and help you finish those half-empty bottles on the counter.
'Leftover' wine? Honestly, Heather. Didn't I teach you anything?
;)
Gorgeous kitchen! The orange is hot.
Is it just my monitor, or is this not really coral?
Coral is orangey-pink, and I don't see any pink tones in this room.
Jac, I think it's your monitor. It definitely has a pink cast. I should have taken a picture at night - with the chandelier on, it is the coziest room I can imagine, and makes everyone's skin look absolutely amazing. I tend towards colours with pink undertones because it makes everyone looks so damned attractive.
Nice to see these colors!
you're fun!
love it.
This has so much charm and is amazingly cheerful! I feel younger just looking at it and that's saying a lot, LOL!! Sometimes not having the ability to do radical renovation can be the spark of true creativity!
p.s. You know it is good when it makes me want to live in an apartment again, LOL!
Very unusual choice of colour for the kitchen.... That being sad, I really love it ! It must be wonderful to wake up in winter and to make coffee in this warm kitchen. Living 300 km north of your city, I know how much warmth and color we need in winter ! Congrats on your colour choice !!!
Heather, if you're still looking for the colour swatches, please post their names if you locate them. I'd love to use this glowing coral in my place. Thanks!
I've seen dozens of Montreal kitchens with this exact same layout that felt drab and dingy in white. The choice of a strong color is brilliant. I can't believe what a difference it makes. I want to email this entry to everyone I know.
And yes, house tour please!
The paint came from Home Depot - they actually have a wonderful "house" palette that I have used for years in my own apartments. Lots of gradients of the same hue.
That said, the closest match I have seen in other paint lines is Sherwin Williams "Daring" (SW 6879). Benjamin Moore "Hot Spice" (2011-30) is similar though this shade is a little brighter.
In the long run, a slightly dull but punchy colour is far more livable. Its been 2 years with this kitchen, and not once have I thought of repainting, which is very unusual for me.
Thanks very much! The SW can be made in BM's Aura, so I am going to get a sample pot made and see how that works out. I think it's going to be a welcome antidote from the late fall Montreal sky.
This kitchen it's so tiny and at the same time so beautiful. All that orange, the chinese umbrella... perfect
This absolutely deserves to win the Colors Contest. Yay Montreal!
I love this kitchen. It's so full of personality and reminds me that people can really make things work if they just take some risks.
love it, should win!
Congratulations on your win! I've been rooting all along though I think you deserve the NYC shopping trip! Thank you for posting the swatches. Off to BM to try coral in our bathroom.
I love all that sun.
Heather, how did you hang the umbrella? Just upside down or what?
love the table & chair set on the balcony/porch - can you point me in the right direction?
Heather, you were my winner!! Thanks for entering!!
Stacey - I just tied some string to the parasol handle and attached it to a hook screwed into the ceiling near the wall.
Heathers - the table and chairs is vintage 70's set I bought at a flea market. It was a one in a million find.
I used to have a parasol just like this hung in my bedroom when I was in high school, and I painted the trim to my room coral and the walls cream at one point. I repainted again and again, but I always had parasols up... they just made me happy. :) I think this is lovely.
I love this kitchen so much that I have to come back to this post every now and then. It makes me happy.
how refreshing!
Love, love, love the orange color and the paper in your cabinets! Big thumbs up :D
