Name: Madeline
Location: San Francisco, California
Type of Home: Shared Two Bedroom Apartment - Owned
Color Inspiration: Our house has been in a constant state of upgrade since January 2007 when my friend and I bought a duplex in the Mission District in San Francisco. The house was built in 1874 and we wanted to keep a lot of it original...

Color Inspiration continued:...character intact however upgrade it to the modern way of living. In regards to the color, the concept is for it to be the backdrop for the furniture and the art which will then add "pops" of color. However, we have also added dramatic accent walls, ceilings, or floors throughout the apartment.
Colors Used: Benjamin Moore, Aura - OC-118 Snowfall White
Benjamin Moore, Aura - AF-655 Silhouette
Sherwin Williams - 6252 Ice Cube
Color Tip:The main color should be a neutral backdrop for your collections, art and furniture. Accent walls can be added for dramatic effects though should be used sparingly and add continuity throughout your home.

I'm loving those two chairs!
I'm sorry, but why is this entry part of the competition? I thought it was a color competition. Gorgeous and lovely place, but not right for this.
I think this is beautiful, but I agree - where are the dramatic accent walls that are described in the post?? This color scheme is about as subtle as it can possibly be. I don't see any reason why subtle colors shouldn't be included in the competition, but I am totally confused by the description vs. the pictures.
The off white cabinet with the maple countertop is gorgeous. I see some homemade terraniums on the shelves. Any advice on how to create those?
The white chairs are divine.
I also like this place....and also am wondering what it's doing in a competition about color?? Maybe it's a problem with the color not showing well due to the photos
Pretty, but seriously lacking in color...especially for a color contest.
I love this place but dear you need some art on the walls! I actually like your statement about white as a background for colors popping up in other places; I don't think a color contest needs to dictate bright colored walls, etc. Another year and you'd be more ready, but I give you a thumbs up as is.
I agree.... very lacking in color
Hang something on the big wall, hide the cords in the corner. Your furniture is beautiful & the room has a good start.
Someone just slipped in a beautiful entry for the NEUTRALS contest...
I love your apartment, but I have to agree that it is rather colorless...but still adore it!
The Lack of Color contest hasn't started yet ;-)
Gorgeous apartment. I agree, not the most colorful one, but still so nice...
Um. Where's the color? Really, I think some people will go to great lengths to get their homes on this site.
The only non color is pure white.
Everything else is a color.
This room has many colors in it, and looks beautiful.
i do think the color is really subtle and quiet, but that's kind of what i like. (the pale barely blue walls? sign me up.) i don't think color has to be screaming to be valid or interesting.
i think the space is a good example of mixing warm and cool tones.
but, hey, that's just me.

The rug is great (and so is the pup).
you have a lovely home. i want your couch & that counter top is just perfect.
i thin w/ just a few changes it would just knock people's socks off though. painting the ceiling a very light, dove gray would be a cool way to bring color in, but still keep things neutral. the space above the shelves would be a great place for a very large painting. i'm thinking something w/ those yellows & a little red would be REALLY nice.
again, this is a very nice space.
Neutrals and pastels are colors too.
I like this place, but I agree that the walls need art. The wall above the shelf unit is particularly empty-looking. A large-scale painting would look perfect there and add some more color.
I actually like this one in the color contest because putting it there forces me to think about all the variations there are in neutral colors. I sometimes overlook how just changing the shade of white on my walls would drastically change the look. So, the combination of different shades of white in this room gives me a greater sense of the impact that white, as a color, has in a space. If this room weren't in the color contest, I don't think I would have paid as much attention to that aspect of it. So, I approve. But then, I'm also a contrarian.
Can't wait to see art on the walls. Bare walls and beige couches make me nervous!
More my style than the other color contest entries, but it does stand out by, er, not standing out.
Also, that wall by the couch looks dreadfully bare!
I'm no expert but you rock Madeline!
peaceful and sophisticated. LOVE IT!
I think this is the epitome of urban tranquility. Well done Madeline!
I think your place looks fantastic. Classy, tasteful, elegant and sophisticated. You should show before and after shots and what you did with the bathroom and entry way. I know there is some bold color in the hallway and awesome textured wallpaper, plus those rad lighting fixtures.
But I think you need something over on the walls, maybe like a family portrait with the pup and kitty, with a purple background.
I remain a fan of your sense of style, the hard work is paying off ladies. Well done indeed!
Well I am an expert on color and think the less is more approach is perfect here! For all those who think splashing a bold color on walls is the only way to get people's attention for a color contest, feast your eyes on this entry! (By the way white is color!...look at your crayon box!) You get my vote Madeline for a nice color palette! Nice start on a beautiful home that will be evolving, ever changing and room for growth in color!
so serene, the bold poppy color has been done.
last i checked, white is a color.
love the simplicity of this place. the egg-shell color cabinets, stainless steel appliances and the gray couch, and restored hardwood floors with hardwood countertops all make for a clean finish and open up the room. definitely a tranquil setup.
even the pup matches the colors...
An uniquely well orchestrated clever and tasteful understatement of color. Simplicity, warmth and charm coalesce into a warm, comfortable, and practical environment. Provides proof of the ancient axiom that sometimes less is more.
love the floors and the simplicity of the room. makes me want to live in such a relaxing place. the energy is soft and light. This room has the perfect balance of color. The dog is a great touch to the room!!!!! love it!!!!!
Lovely.....
I would love to know where you got that rug! It is exactly what I've been looking for.
Great work....so tasteful...no clutter to distract...
Awesome. Love the white chairs, what a great fine!
Holy cow...I'm not sure how this submission was selected as it is completely devoid of colour. Nothng on the walls...just curious as to what prompted you to feel this was an awesome area to submit to the COLOUR contest.
