Type of Home: Rental Apartment
Color Inspiration: The bedroom in which I lived before this one was large enough to make painting the walls midnight blue with bright red-orange stripes feasible. When I moved into this apartment, I wanted to retain the drama....

Color Inspiration continued: ...that bold and dark colors create, but didn't want to feel claustrophobic in the smaller bedroom. I decided to use the bold color on the coved ceiling, and kept the walls an airier light blue-gray. Even with the bold ceiling, I think that the overall effect is restful.
Colors Used:
Ceiling: Ralph Lauren Harbour
Walls: Ralph Lauren Polaris
Dresser (orange): Ralph Lauren Baja Orange
Color Tip:When I go to pick out paint, I usually have a rough idea of what I'm looking for but I always let my gut lead. I usually surprised with at least one of my color choices. When painting, don't let yourself judge the color until you're done with the room. In my experience, the whole is almost always greater than the sum of its parts!

It's nice to see someone using the picture rail! I love those details, and love the painted ceiling.
I love the curtains and have been looking for some just like that. Where are they from?
Very well done!
I can't help but notice that the dresser bears a striking resemblance to bacon.
Mmmmm....bacon.
Loving the deep blue overhead!
I agree: love the curtains, love bacon
Great ceiling.
Have you tried the arc lamp over the bed instead?
Very nice! I'm also interested in where you got the curtains.
I think the dresser would have been better with the orange in a solid (rather than a "slab") treatment.
Very nice decor. I wished the ceiling color was not that bold. Room feels claustrophobic and small.
I actually like the midnight blue ceiling. I'm guessing it creates a restful and peaceful vibe at night.
WOW! simply beautiful!

Yes yes yes!
I'm in awe with these colors! Love the ceiling! Nice job.
Your dark ceiling has inspired me. It is so cozy and it is such a beautiful classic color.
Great design decision using the darker color on the ceiling instead of the walls. The room achieves a balance of being inviting and relaxing without the dark color feeling oppressive.
Thank you all for your feedback! The shades are homemade from miniblinds, as per instructions linked to from AT. My litmus test for the ceiling was that the color couldn't look black if even only the dimmest of my light sources were illuminated, so I chose a blue with a lot of richness and even warmth; I hope that it minimizes claustrophobia. The Arc lamp I did put over my bed at first, but I didn't like the feeling of having anything hovering over the bed like that, and the idea of a light source along that wall was appealing. I really bought it to go over my dining table in an Apartment of the Future. And as for the dresser...I was going for a faux bois effect. Admittedly, it's not the way I was imagining the result would be...but I like to think that the effect is at least less bacon-y in person.
This is my favorite room. Intimate, peaceful, beautiful.
im loving vibrant orange accents this year! well done, looks amazing.
