I told the chandelier designer that I wanted it classic but updated and large enough to feel like it was eating at the table with us.
The whole apartment is just under 500 square feet, but I entertain a lot so I wanted a "formal" dining area. The solution was to get a simple round table with a leaf, and use Louis Ghost chairs and a mirrored buffet (with an incredible amount of storage) so as not to take up too much visual space. The painting was inherited and came in a bright gold frame which I painted high gloss white to stand out against the medium gray walls, and the pink and brown placemats (drawn from colors in the artwork) helped liven up the table.

Love it. I have long been eyeing that buffet online, but have no room in my home. And the ghost chairs are wonderful.
l really like the furniture and the chandelier is wonderful but I personally think that placemats should be stored away until they need to be used.
i agree with jheightsgirl. the room looks great, but the place mats should be put away. personally, i'd use a beautiful table cloth when entertaining, and do away with the placemats altogether. when finished, put away the table cloth and show off the table with a nice centerpiece.

I agree on the place mats, but go one step further. Get yourself some curved placemats.

Ignore that dowdy pattern. They are really easy to make (or have made) and customize exactly to your table. I'd do a leather/pleather that was close in color to the table. With maybe a really cool modern graphic on one side. Maybe a small version of this in silver.
