Name: Rosie (18 months)
Location: Lafayette, CA
Division: Single Room
Room Size: 18 square feet
Tip for Living Small with Kids: Be realistic about what items are necessities and what are luxuries and to each family it may be different! We have found from small living, less is always more. And really, what's always more important for a child than space is a loving, encouraging, supportive family!
Biggest Design Challenge in this Room: The biggest challenge in this room was fitting the crib. Rosie's Papa had to rip open the back wall and pancake the studs so we could get the extra 1 1/2" so the doors could close! Adding a window was also a challenge but important so Mama could feel good about closing the doors on such a small space! A lot of work up front, but so worth it for Rosie to have her own space for naps and night time sleep! We also had to be creative in transforming every little inch into usable space. Papa built a custom shelving unit next to the crib, a rope suspended shelving unit by the changing table and new paint job for an old cabinet and armoire helped up the baby stuff 'hiding spots'!
Favorite Thing About This Room: Our favorite thing about this room is 'we did it' and are 'doing it'! Successfully, and happily, living in a 380 sq ft. studio with a baby when everyone thought we were nuts! Rosie's comfy cranny has been an incredible addition to our apartment. A heavy curtain, closing doors and a ocean sound machine make it possible for Mama and Papa to continue living just 2 inches away! ....thru every nap and night time snoozy...
Thanks for your entry Shannon and good luck!

Very cute room, I can see you put a lot of effort into it!
I was wondering though, do you really close the closet doors while your daughter is sleeping in there? Because small, warm, unventilated spaces have a very high increased risk for SIDS.
Also, the window, is it locked? Your daughter looks old enough to start climbing, and she could easily pull herself up to the window and climb/fall out.
Again, cute is nice, but safety is, and should be, the number one priority for parents.
I would LOVE to see Ohdeedoh have a disclaimer on these kinds of posts, that extra precautions should be used in tiny spaces to keep it well ventilated and temperature controlled to decrease the risk of SIDS.
Very sweet! But, I would worry about Roo's fingers getting smashed in the closing closet doors. Any chance on putting the doors aside for a bit?
"•Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is still
a leading cause of death for infants aged one
month to one year in developed countries.
•The increased risk of SIDS in at-risk infants
(prone sleep position, covered by a blanket
during sleep or placed on soft bedding) may be
explained by rebreathing of exhaled CO2
which is confined to a small unventilated area
near a sleeping infant‘s airway.
•Use of a fan during sleep decreases the risk of
SIDS by 72%:
“…increasing room ventilation by using a fan
helps to disperse accumulated CO2 in the
dead air space around the nose and mouth of
infants in sleeping environments that
heighten the risk of rebreathing."

Very cute! Love love love the polka dot storage bins. Where can I find these?
It looks like there is a curtain and curtain rod in the closet behind the doors, so I assume they draw the curtain rather than shut the closet doors while their baby is sleeping...
Nice job. This makes me want to see the rest of your space!
I assume if they went to all the trouble to put the window in to give their daughter ventilation, that they are taking SIDS into account. I also notice the fan in there.
I also assume if they're going to all that trouble, they are taking precautions about said window, and about the closet doors, etc.
I may be taking waaaay too many liberties here, but I also assume that those closet doors aren't *always* shut, but I could be wrong.
Cute space!
I wanted to address the above concern of SIDS in this small room and can see now I should have provided some more details in our description of 'how' Rosie sleeps in her room especially if people are getting room ideas from this site.
It is very important to have a well ventilated space and this was our 1st concern as we started to think about where a baby would fit into our studio. We would have never considered this space if it didn't have a window, which is alway open when she's sleeping (our mild CA weather allows us this luxury) (and yes there is a child lock on it).
Second, we always turn her fan on to help circulate air when she goes to bed (it also helps with providing more white noise).
Thirdly, the doors that 'close' don't create a seal - we purposely created 1" gaps at the top and bottom to provide more air flow. And every night when we go to bed we open the doors.... mostly b/c she's such a cute little morning alarm clock waving and smiling at us! And as our own disclaimer no one should attempt such a small space with out thoroughly understanding the dangers of SIDS and making the necessary adjustments to decrease the risk.
As for 'smashing' Roo's fingers, I guess you will just have to trust that we've already thought of that and take the necessary precautions so that won't happen.

Awesome! 380 square feet? I would love to see the whole place.
KMichel, the bins are from Target. I've got them in my little boy's room too. Unfortunately, Target isn't carrying them any longer because I'd love a couple more.
I love the colour scheme in this room!! Of course you thought about ventilation and SIDS - you've clearly put a ton of care into the planning here. Fantastic job in such a tiny space, and what a beautiful little girl!
This seems like such a wonderful space for the little one. I'm curious to see how the space will adapt to her growth. And I would also love to see the rest of the space.
This little nook is so cute but more importantly, an amazing accomplishment for such a small area. Plus, did anyone else notice that the little cutie is 18 months? I am impressed that you and your husband have managed to create a real life for your new family but also mantain a life where you as a couple can live without "living in whispers." Really, I would love to know more about the rest of your place. Thanks for submitting this one.
i agree with the other commenters: please give us a tour of your place... if it's anything as cool as your daughter's side of the room then i'd love to see it
Lovely colour combination.
Can't wait to order A Child's Garden of Verses and see it in person!
You carved out a wonderful place for your daughter. Love the colors!
Absolutely love the room!! :) Stealing the ribbon tie idea for our closet.
I'm so tired reading of all these safety lectures on AT. :( Can't we just appreciate the beautiful spaces?
This space is awesome! Great job! The colors are perfect, the window add so much. Very innovative use of space.
The doors are only there to hide everything away when guest are coming over I'm sure.
This is truly an ingenious way of making your space work for a growing family. We think we need so much more space then we really do! Well done!
Creative use of space. Very relaxing color scheme. Nice job!
