One of my favorite design elements these days are globes; I recently added one to our living room and it is the best part of the room. Globes are great pieces for kids' rooms, too, since they are both aesthetically pleasing and educational. This tutorial will show you how to make a minimalist, interactive globe from one very simple ingredient.
Kristi Murphy, at her eponymous website, made this beautiful globe out of two wooden bowls from IKEA. With a small hinge and a white paint pen, the bowls were transformed into a globe that actually opens, so your kids can store all kinds of treasures in it. If you're not skilled at freehanding the continents, it's simple to download some silhouettes from the internet and use them to trace your landforms.
While you won't be teaching the specifics of any countries or capitals with this project, you can get a jump on the continents and have a lot of fun in the process.
