We've just added a second bedside lamp to our room, having only used one side of the bed up until now. As a single person, the "other" side of the bed often goes neglected, and we've decided to change that. This has caused us to take a closer look at different arrangements of light sources in the bedroom.
Here are some of our favorite iterations of the bedside lamp. We often read, so prefer some sort of task light, but there are some interesting ideas in here!
Row 1
• 1 We love the juxtaposition of an ornate chandelier on one side with an angled, jointed, modern task light on the other at Living Etc.
• 2 Desire to Inspire has a beautiful image of a room designed by Angie Hranowsky that employes a more traditional, symmetrical look.
• 3 We're not sure how functional this pendant lamp over the bed would be for reading, but it certainly is gorgeous! Via Living Etc.
• 4 Bolig Magasinet designed this room with a statement floor lamp next to the bed, via Desire to Inspire.
• 5 Door Sixteen showcased another bed with a statement floor lamp next to it, photographed by Per Magnus Persson
Row 2
• 1 We love the sculptural look of this task light, especially against the bold blue wall, at Living Etc.
• 2 Living Etc. (always a source of inspiration) also presented a dual hanging pendant design that we love.
• 3 If you're game, this candle-powered floor lamp seen at Poppytalk adds a gothic romance to the bedroom! (from Biskopsgarden)

"As a single person....we've"? I'm usually okay with the second-person plural, but this is going a bit too far.
Agreed. And what's so wrong with speaking in first-person anyways?
"And what's so wrong with speaking in first-person anyways?"
Unless one is rightfully addressed as "Your Majesty" - referring to oneself as "We" is extremely pompous...
AT bloggers might also note how highly distracting this type of writing is from conveying the desired message.
One thing I consider a must for bedside lamps are the adapters that turn any lamp into a "touch" lamp...just plug the adapter into the wall, plug the lamp into the adapter and anywhere you touch metal on the lamp turns the lamp on. It works with 3-way lamps as well. No more fumbling for light switches in the dark!
Pretty, but not practical for reading. Some of those lights look too dim, some way too hot and bright. The only ones that look practical are the first two photos.
"we" is generally used in any publication that has multiple writers. Magazines do it all the time. The idea behind it is that the publication is ONE voice of a cohesive collective. But yes, it's silly.
I'm not into the pendant centered over the bed. The other photos are more interesting. Personally, I'm a big fan of the mismatched pair in the bedroom, to keep things from looking too symmetrical. In our bedroom, we have two different vintage Marshall Studios lamps:

PLEASE, AT editors, let this be the year you do away with the royal "we." It just doesn't work the way you think it does. And look how many of us can't see past the bad grammar to even write about the posts!
Does anybody know anything about where to find the two lovely lamps featured in the first photo? "We" love them!
Professional magazines using the "royal we" also have professional editors who ensure that something like "As a single person... we've..." never makes it to print. Since AT has no copy editors, I suggest following newspaper style and dispensing with first-person narrative altogether. Beats functional illiteracy any day.
Yeah, I'm a bitch this afternoon. Sorry. But the misused "we" and the allergy to running spell check... it burns.
I like the idea of #1, and number 5 is just cool. I've been pondering my bedside lamp situation and not found the perfect fit yet (I have a dramatic pendant fixture over the bed and really need something simple, sleek and functional for the bedside).
I think sconces work well instead of lamps.
I love the turquoise lamps in the yellow room, and the round rugs are genius.
That's a really pretty flowered bed cover - who makes that?
I used to use bamboo bedside lamps, but lately I started to use touch sensitive lamps.
I must say that changing lamps made a really nice change in my night times. I love to read before sleep and only touching the lamp to turn it off without trying to find the closing button while sleep is so sweet is a nice thing. :)
Link is not helpful...where can I get lamp in #1 (the yellow one)? Any ideas?
Not really very practical, but I love the atmosphere created by the large lantern in the last photo!
u people all have way to much time to actually post about the grammar, i am aware of the irony that making this post is condoning my own hated for comments non article content related and i am annoyed at myself for doing so.
but please, AT readers, stop being so anal. people mess up sometimes, and do you know why? because they are human. give the bloggers a break, you are not paying for this, so one or two slip ups is completely forgivable for the amount of good articles, pictures, and all other kinds of content they supply.
rant over, but if i see one more "omg they put there instead of their" type comment i am going to find where you live and cut off all your fingers! try typing completely pointless comments then!
zhenpoo, it is not casual errors that bothers us grammar freaks, at least in this case. It is the deliberate use of a plural pronoun to imply a collective mindset where there isn't one. It seems to be an editorial policy (or affectation) to substitute the word "we" for "I" to suggest that a team of writers was behind the post. That makes little sense when the post is attributed to a single writer who is named at the bottom of the text. And it makes no sense when a sentence includes both "single person" and "we" as the subject.
yes - where would one find the yellow floor lamp in the first photo? it is lovely and the link is no more forthcoming.
When confronted with a royal "we", my mother always says "Are you the Queen or do you have mice in your pockets?
AT always keeps that phrase foremost in my mind :)
