We've covered the range of eco-friendly paints before, but finding eco-friendly stains can be a little bit tougher. But they are out there, and ready to use for your project, low-VOC's and all. Check out our list after the jump!
AFM Safecoat Stains & Sealers: Very low-VOC content, durable and works for both interior and exterior applications. The water-based DuroStain comes in eight wood tones using natural mineral pigments and contains no aniline dyestuffs, no gilsonite or asphalt, no aromatic solvents, formaldehyde or UV inhibitors.
BioShield Interior/Exterior Wood Stains: BioShield Healthy Living Aqua Resin Stain Finish is a solvent-free water-based, zero VOC, wood stain finish for interior and exterior applications. It comes in eight standard wood tones and ten color stains, all using natural pigments.
Vermont Natural Coatings: This product made the 2008 list of Building Green's top products. PolyWhey is a waterborne wood finish that uses recycled whey protein, a by-product of the dairy industry, as a binder. Available for floor or furniture, these low-odor coatings contain no toxic heavy metals and have a VOC level less than 180 g/L. It is available in a number of finishes and the cans are made from 100% pre-consumer recycled polypropylene.
Minwax 250 VOC Compliant Wood Finish: Minwax, long a tried and true wood stain product, has come out with their own low-VOC line of stains to match their traditional line. The 250 VOC Compliant stains are oil-based and available in twelve wood tone colors.
TimberSoy: TimberSoy is a natural wood stain made from soybean oils, and according to the manufacturer the "technology contains the only 100% solids, bio-based zero VOC colorant pigments." It is available in twelve standard wood tones, but can also use their pigments to create custom tints.
Sansin EnviroStain: This low-VOC product comes with an amazingly high count of color options &mdash 71! Sansin is water-based and contains modified natural oils and resins that work to enhance your wood without harsh or flammable solvents. Available in both interior and exterior formulations and a variety of finishes.
