We're fans of using floor cushions for extra seating in a small space. They're stackable, usually cheaper than a chair, and they can warm up a room with color, texture, or pattern. Click below for our picks...
Okay... I have seen that floor cushion from West Elm about 5 million times and every time I see it (or a carpet like it) I get even more angry. How the heck do you seriously expect someone to have a FLOOR cushion, FLOOR being the operative word, that is not only WHITE but FUR (or furlike). My god this thing would look like crap within about 2 weeks. Not to mention a carpet EEEEEK!!
I would never dare to ask anyone over the age of 30 to sit on the floor like a child. Sure, if you're in your 20's it's cool. But at a certain age, an adult expects to be seated in a chair in his/her guest's place.
My husband is legally blind and has to sit very close the the tv to see it, but there is no good way to position a chair close enough for him, but out of the way enough for others to watch as well. Floor cushions work very well though! But no matter how hard I try, I can't find one that lasts more than 6 months. I can go through 10 a year, and that starts to build up. His current three are flat as pancakes. Any suggestions? They have to be adult sized and durable.
I LOVE the Suzani pillow, but I wish they had different patterns so I wouldn't have three of the same one.I helped move an elderly woman into a new home and she gave me five silk floor cushions that she brought back from overseas when she was much younger. They don't match my decor, as they are quite ornate with a gold threaded pattern, but they really are gorgeous. We love our floor cushions, ours are in the Florida room. It makes for a nice area to sit back with the laptop, or a book, or to lounge around and talk about how school/work went.I also don't have china for special occasions. Okay, that's a lie...my Franciscan Starburst collection only comes out for guests.
I think the concept is fantastic. I adore the style of the orient, which is the theme I used in my den. I ordered my lighting online. Here's the shade I just got http://www.alluminare.com/shades.asp?SKU=S120-67;P-9700-9700-10-nonex0-nonex1-0000. It's shown in the Japanese Cane that I chose.I have been wanting to set up the table with pillow seating, and this post just inspired me. I absolutely love woven floor cushions shown here. I might have to order a few of those...
I've been to several people's homes...who are adults and do use floor cushions. I went to a friend's party whom just returned from Paris, and threw a cheese and wine party. Her home... she's got a 2 sofas in her living room area, full dining table with seating for 10, a sun room that steps up from the dining room with additional seating, seating in the kitchen if you want to be where the action is. There was more than enough chair seating, but it was also the floor cushion option...and people chose the floor cushion option. No-one was asked...but there was a stack of them up in the sun room. Of course her home is immaculate...and gorgeous...
I'm 29, and while I love the look of floor pillows, it is just way too hard for me to get down to the floor and get back up again for me to want to actually use them as seating. I see guys going for the floor seating more than I see girls wanting to do that. You just get to a certain age and the floor seems to get further and further away...
linecaro, my mom is in the same boat. have you tried:http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20033919(with a softer cushion on top maybe?)also, these are huge:http://search.anthropologie.com/?q=floor pillowhttp://www.pbteen.com/srch/index.cfm?words=floor cushion&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
Sam Kraus and HB you both made me laugh and so true.I like the look of the 18-inch Woven Floor Cushion from Ernst & Thistle, might like these as back cushions on a bed or day bed with a simple charcoal grey cover.
linecaro, have you tried meditation cushions or benches? They're firmer, but they're designed for extended sitting, and can always be covered in a more attractive fabric. My friend outfitted his meditation club with cushions from Dharma Crafts:http://www.dharmacrafts.com/100xCU/Meditation-Cushions-&-Mats.html
On a related note, I've sometimes wondered why kotatsus (http://www.jlifeinternational.com/furnishings/kotatsu/kotatsu_e.html) haven't gained popularity. Maybe it's because American adults don't like to sit on the floor .. or maybe American adults don't like to sit on the floor because they've never experienced a kotatsu.Either way, most kotatsus are pretty ugly .. has anyone ever seen a good looking one for sale?
I think it's pretty scary if a 29-yearold finds it difficult to sit down on the floor physically. I'm only 25, so maybe I'm still young enough not to feel achy in the bones...I love floor cushions, our place is just a bit drafty, so sitting on the floor is usually not an option during evenings. Too bad.
linecaro, what about a nice ottoman or a cushioned bench? It won't block the tv or look too weird in front of the tv and you can easily move those out of the way when he's not watching tv. It will also be extra seating for guests or a tabletop if you put a tray on top. Ottomans come in many different shapes, sizes, colors/patterns and price ranges. Places like Target have ottoman covers if you want to change up the look. And I'm sure it's just as comfortable as a floor pillow.
Lillie, I've had a bad back since my teens and found out in my mid-20s I had two bad discs, so I can relate to Amie's dilemma.Personally, I dislike floor cushions. How in the world can you keep a wood floor clean enough to use them? I mean, people do walk on them. Do you mop every minute? They'd never work in my house -- which is not immaculate, but clean.
I LOVE my floor cushion from World Market and use it every single day. I always sit on the cushion in front of my coffee table and use my laptop.
I am all for floor pillows as well. I own a few of the large Amenity cushions and are always in use when I have guests over.check them herehttp://www.nest-living.com/collections/amenity-pillows/products/amenity-trail-26x26-hemp-pillow-silver/
