My mother-in-law recently made a quilt for our home out of old suit jackets -- tweeds, cottons, suede. Although quilting is easy (so we hear), and a heartfelt gift to yourself or others, if you love the patchwork look but aren't convinced about getting crafty, there are plenty of modern quilts out there for either purchase or inspiration. We rounded up several from L.L. Bean, Pottery Barn, and Anthropologie here:
Aiden velvet patchwork quilt from Pottery Barn, ($219 full/queen on sale)
Iris patchwork bedding from Anthropologie, ($198 queen)

Alhambra patchwork bedding from Anthropologie, ($198 queen)
Vintage patchwork quilt from L.L. Bean, ($159 full/queen)
Flying Geese cotton quilt from L.L. Bean, ($149 full/queen)
Traditional Cabin cotton quilt from L.L. Bean, ($149 full/queen)
Sand Dollar quilt from L.L. Bean, ($229 full/queen)

Sheex Bedding
The patchwork is lovely, but I think that it's the hanging orange blanket and seat that really pull the look together in the first picture. Like stepping into fall.
Very beautiful - love the chair and the matching orange quilt in the background on the first picture.
What about Denyse Schmdt? Terribly expensive but modern...and probably easier for a novice sewer to replicate! If I lived in CT or NYC I'd go to a workshop!
PATCHWORK is easy, but quilting is a total pain -- tedious, exacting, unwieldy. (That's why you find so many "quilt tops" on eBay unquilted.)
You can find nice vintage, hand-made quilts on eBay in the $50 range. I think they have more personality than the machine-made mass-produced ones, and at half (or less) the price.
I no longer have any idea what the word "modern" means.
Hey Guys!
I'm looking for that type of canopy bed in either white or black... but for under $500.
Does anyone know of one? Thanks!
Miss Claudia-Ikea has one

It's yellow, but you could always paint it.
Quilting isn't easy! Take it from a geek that quilts...
thank you so much Homebody!
Urban Outfitters also has some great ones, and they are cheaper than those listed here. Like this one on sale for $49.99! http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=60&startValue=1&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=14159891&parentid=A_FURN_BEDDING_QUILTS&sortProperties= product.marketingPriority,-product.startDate&navCount=141&navAction=poppushpushpush&color=&pushId=A_FURN_BEDDING_QUILTS&popId=A_FURN_BEDDING&prepushId=APARTMENT_FURNISH
Mass produced quilts frighten me, and I also have no idea how these are modern in any way.
By the way - I sew and have made quilts so I'm not a total hater.
hi - thanks for the thoughts. i guess i meant "patchwork" was easy, according to my mother-in-law. i'd love to learn more about quilting in all its forms. also, i use the word "modern" to refer to something new, current.
Sometime I plan to convert my collection of vintage rayon kimonos (the bathrobe kind, not the gorgeous, valuable, collectible kind) into a quilt of some kind... The patterns on the fabric resemble origami paper, so maybe a design the feels like origami would be fun...
where is the quilt in the top photo from? does anyone know?
can someone tell me where those wall lights are from in the top photo? I've been looking for these for some time, but have only seen table versions. Thanks lots

I was just looking for a quilt, so this is the best post for me!
There's too much math involved in quilt projects for me.
