I think it's funny that napkin rings are considered "fancy" these days. I was always told that napkin rings are to keep used napkins for re-use at the next meal. If you're washing your napkins after every use, there's no real need for a ring, it's just an excuse to add some extra stuff to your tabletop.
I don't understand the need for napkin rings. They are nice, but sooo superficial.
We had different shaped napkin rings growing up so that we knew which (already used) napkins were ours. I still like them but yeah if not for that reason, they're just for show really. For fancy dinner parties I know a couple neat napkin fold, like a fan shape set on the plate.
