Growing up I had a window seat in my bedroom and loved it! It had storage underneath, which was great for giving me extra room beyond my closet space. It is fun to sit on the seat and gaze out the window. Built-ins give a space customizable seating options. Also, the piece of furniture looks like it is made for the space.
Shown Above: Jennifer's High/Low Home in the Hills: Window seats in the kitchen add extra casual seating for guests to be able to chat with the host during parties. People love to gather in the kitchen, so having an extra place to sit down is always helpful.
Stairway Window Seat: House of Turquoise: Need an extra place to curl up with a good book. I have always lusted over window seats at the end of a staircase. They can change the look of a staircase and give it the extra wow factor.
Craftsman Dream House in Venice: Redfin: I am finding that more homes are utilizing casual dining areas in the kitchen versus sitting at a formal dining room table. I love how the striped fabric on the built-in bench breaks up the rich wood tones of the kitchen and visually separates the space.
Inspiration: Home Library with Window Seat: This is my dream built-in window seat — positioned between two large bookcases. The architectural quality of the piece is completely inspiring. Now to fill the bookcase with books and to lounge out on the window seat all weekend!

I'll be having a kind of large window in my bedroom and plan to make a window seat with storages. It is a good way to furnish the lost space between the floor and the window.
Window seats are very pleasant, and house cats and dogs enjoy them, too.
We used to call my window seat "the happy place." It was nine feet long with four inch foam and 10 pillows. It was deep enough for long afternoon naps and it was south facing so the sun hit it just right. I had my coffee there every morning, read the paper, and watched the world go by. My husband built it for me when we first moved in together and I told him I always wanted one. He built storage underneath and I would change the fabric cover on the cushion when the mood would strike.
We moved. We had to leave my window seat behind. I'll always miss it.

I've had a window seat in the plan for my living/bedroom for about a year. Just have to replace the futon so there's room for it. I can't wait!
I have a window seat in my entry. LOVE it. Just wish there was storage under it. My son and I are thinking about some careful excavation to see if there is any way to retrofit. I don't want to mess up the nearly 100 year old woodwork!
WINDOW SEAT LUST. When I was a kid and my family decided to move, I told the realtor to find me a room with a window seat. For some reason, she did - all the houses we looked at had them. I fell in love with one that had plane wallpaper (I planned to change that) and a ridiculous huge closet.
Of course, my parents found a house for sale by owner...that didn't have a window seat...and that's the one they bought.
I drive past the house I "chose" every day now, and I still wish I had that awesome window seat.
I saw one in Fine Homebuilding in an Old Mexico Courtyard house, that was very cool: instead of a bench seat along the window, it was more like a booth with no table - two short cushioned benchs facing each other, built into a window nook. LOVED it! Still have the magazine, too.
They really look lovely and I too dream of having one in the future but they really don't look that comfortable...
I've seen plans and instructions for building a window seat/radiator cover before. Does anyone know how safe that actually is?
window seat is something I would love to have
unfortunately we have a big radiator below every single window in our home occupying every inch of beneath-the window space :-(
but I could dream of one to build in my dream home some day ...
More window seats please!!
That's what my house has been missing! Operation install window seats now in Progress. Great post Marcia! =)
I LOVE WINDOW SEATS!!! They're beautiful, functional and make a house feel like a home.
