If you like the look of a wallpapered backsplash, here are a few things to keep in mind when you try the idea at home:
• Consider installing a layer of glass or plexiglass over the wallpaper to protect the surface from grease and other splashes. Check out this post for one example of the process from an Apartment Therapy house tour (fifth photo above).
• Certain wallpapers are designed with water-resistance in mind and can be used instead of tile. This "splash-proof" wallpaper from Graham and Brown comes in several cheerful patterns. Temporary vinyl wallpapers are also a great choice for renters who want a quick but lease-friendly kitchen update.
• Postcards, drawings, and other patterns of your own designs or from your own collection can easily be hung behind a sheet of plexiglass for a backsplash too. This post highlights some fun ideas.

Has anyone tried the wallpaper backsplash? How has it worked out?

I'm really glad you guys posted something like this. I'm actually in the process of looking for temporary wallpaper to use as a backsplash in my kitchen... Do you have any suggestions? I'm not sure where to find any. I have a very mid-century looking kitchen, so I think I want a bright vibrant solid color. Any suggestions on where to buy, brands that work best, etc? I'm in Chicago, so if you know any local suggestions, that would be great!
i couldn't commit to a tile when remodeling our kitchen 2 years ago. so i went with paintable wallpaper. i have used it before in my dining room and our master bedroom and it is really great for older homes with not so great walls as it hides all sorts of imperfections. you can find it textured in just about any pattern you can think of. our remodel involved removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room. the wallpaper i used is on the lower half of the dining room - from the chair rail down, so it really helped tie the 2 rooms together. i used glossy white so everything wipes right off.
I am in the process of picking a wallpaper for this exact project. I really love the look of the paper in one of the photos you used. The photo with the greenish-blue paisley print, red rug on the floor, white cabinets. Can you help me figure out where that wallpaper is from?
