A good rugman is hard to find. We agonize over rugs with our clients and find that there are far fewer resources to choose from than for furniture. It is also made tougher by the fact that a good rug is one of the most expensive purchases you can make.
We were tipped off to Rugman.com and would love to get more feedback. From the outside, this looks like an excellent resource for quality Persian and Oriental rugs at discout prices.
Rugman was started in 1998 from an existing rug importing/exporting business, and their aim is to succeed by cutting out the middlemen and selling direct to us at wholesale or below...
Their prices are impressive and the quality seems assured, but it is darn hard to choose a rug from a picture online. We list them as a new resource and urge readers to weigh in. (Thanks, Sully6!) MGR

I have just recently purchased a rug from rugman.com as well, and I looove it! I totally get the walking barefoot thing - these rugs are beautiful and comfy! I got my certificate of authenticity and payed a really great price too - need to get more I think!
Neela, the site does give information about country of origini -some of their rugs, at least in the modern section, were made in China. Not that there aren't problems elsewhere, but the poor regulatory environment there is leading me to avoid buying products made there unless I can't help it (e.g., try to find an umbrella not made in China!)
Well, you could always buy a Brigg umbrella. Quality (and first world manufacturing, in regard to the umbrella) costs an awful lot these days.
I'm laughing. Here in Toronto, walk a block and you'll find a Persian/Asian carpet importer. OK, maybe not every block, but darn close. It tickles my funny bone to see someone here capitalizing on that set of niche connections to sell NorAm wide. Usually, we're fighting to either get or fight off imports from the US, depending on what it is. :) This time the shoe is on the other foot. Yaaaaaaaaaayyyy!!!!
www.rugman.com is headquartered in Markham, a Toronto suburb and the Buffalo PO box is maintained to receive US correspondence. That's why the returned payment check ("cheque") came from a Canadian bank.
We ordered a flatweave rug from rugman and we're happy with it. Ours was in the $300 range. It has a lived-in look and has imperfections in both the weaving and the coloring. However, because this rug is old we expected this quality and in fact wanted this look- it contrasts nicely with our modern furniture. The flatweave is a thinner rug and somewhat scratchy (but feels soft on the feet)- it is not super fluffy like the hand knotted rugs. The color was also fairly accurate based on the pictures. The rug also seemed clean and doesn't smell funky. Our rug is from Iran- clearly there is some element of the unknown when purchasing an imported product like this so I can understand being hesitant. Rugman service was good- they were fast and sent us information about caring for the rug a 10% discount coupon for the next order. My husband's parents have also ordered more expensive, hand knotted rugs from rugman with success.
