- What I Love About My Small Home:
- When first viewed I instantly knew the apartment was a perfect blank canvas for epxperimenting with my new design aesthetic. The exposed beams and vaulted ceilings are beautiful. The apartment was built in 1668 and has a unique character that can only be acquired with time. I take pride in the fact that as an artist my hand has a part in many aspects of the home. The photo over the sofa was taken out the window of my pick-up truck driving cross country with my brother. The side tables are logs found in an alley in Arizona. The coffee table I made from a giant piece of wood that washed up on shore in Long Island. The Bar cart was rescued from an abandoned warehouse down the block. The Huge chandelier I grabbed from a salvage shop for $200 spray painted white and hung from an old pully given to me by my granfather. I thrive on trying to proove that great design doesnt have to cost a fortune and can have sentimental meaning as well.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The biggest challenge was editing. For the first year I had a different layout in the living room to fit a 60" round dining table. Eventually I came to realize it was too much for the space and had to take it out. The 38" square table in the kitchen was all we really needed. Just like any other art form sometimes you have to go too far before you can understand the limits.

I love this. What sofa is that? It all looks so lush and comfy, arty and luxurious. Very nice. Love the dog. You're cute, too! (I know that is inappropriate, my first time but couldn't help it). I could live in the apartment for sure.
WOW that is the nicest hand-drawn floor plan. The rest is also very nice and well curated.
I'm giving you my vote since I like what I see, but I almost didn't only because you didn't show the kitchen (would have preferred that over the bar cart). Your dog is outstanding!
Ryan, your apartment is amazing!
1668? Really? That would make it one of the oldest buildings in the US. Your home is wonderful. I especially adore the floors. Very cool photos on your wall as well. Does having that table over the end of your bed ever bother you? I'm sure I'd spend my nights kicking it and stubbing my toe.
Great place - so cozy. Love all the plants too. (Though this seems a little newer than Was your place really built in 1668 though? ;)
This is a wonderful space! I like all of it...including the doggie...they always make a place special. Really like what you've done with mixing rustic and elegant:)
GET OUT OF TOWN THIS PLACE IS AMAZING
AMAZING. Heading to go buy houseplants right now!
I love this home, so rustic meets well-thought-out and cozy......................great job! Your dog is a-dorable too!
If this doesn't get to the finals then I'll be shocked. Gorgeous!
Somehow I doubt the 1668 (based on a quick google/wiki search), but great place nevertheless!
1668 must be a typo, right? So...1968 (not really worth noting)? 1868 (it doesn't look that old, but maybe)?
Either way, I like it.
Actually, if the house is one of the first settler dwellings, 1668 is fairly accurate. It seems Glen Cove was established by white settlers between 1668 and 1679.

If it's the Robert Cole Homestead, 1668 is accurate - a quick google search turned up this: http://www.glencoveheritage.com/coleshomestead.pdf
Oh wow, Ryan lives in my hometown! (I just inherited one of the smallest homes there...under 750 square feet...I'm hoping it'll be featured in next year's Small Cool contest.)
This flat is a stunner and yet another advert for BIG ART on the walls. Between the layout, the layers, the lanterns, the forsythia and the plants, there is a lot to love. Well done.
Gorgeous. Love all the architectural details. How does your full size dog like living in a little apartment? Love the globes above the bed, do they all have lights in them or are they purely decorative?
I LOVE that bed! The lighting, the doggie, etc...I want to jump in!
Got my vote. Like the colors. Like the dog.
I am voting for the blue arm chair.
I am in L.O.V.E.

What a beautiful space!
Umm, where do the nonbelievers regarding the age of the house live? There's nothing surprising about a house built in 1668 here in the northeast. There are currently a few on the market on Cape Cod from that time period such as the Thomas Allyn House, circa 1680 (2730 Main St. Banrstable Village, MA) and The Phinney House from 1659 http://www.robertpaul.com/cape-cod-homes-listing.asp?id=811
OUTSTANDING!!! Loving this place and am truly inspired by it and can only imagine it feels as good as it looks... I especially really love seeing how an artist lives in their own space :-) Awesome job Ryan!!!!
love the bar open lightbox. can you tell me where it's from?
aw, found it: http://www.etsy.com/listing/77755273/vintage-wooden-bar-open-light-box. hopefully i can find another!
FABULOUS!!
Wow! Such love and creativity. Winner in my book!
I was rather disappointed with homes entered this year but this one is a stunner! Definitely #1 so far.
Love this place, the blue accents and wood pieces give it such a fresh and coastal feel. That blue armchair is the best!
This place seems so relaxing. I really love the blue chair. What is the fabric it's covered in? I also have to say it's an amazing floor plan drawing. Seeing how the cow hides are layered over the rug symmetrically really helped clarify the photos. houseofthebonestorm.blogspot.com
Very nice place. I love blue arm chair. What chair is that ?
absolutely fabulous!
This place is insanely gorgeous! I was so disappointed in the homes this year but not anymore.
And, um, how can I possibly be the only person to notice that the home owner is beyond hot too? Ridiculously handsome, playing with a dog, paint on his paints and cares about his home. Yep, I'm in love.
wow. I mean WOW!!!!!
I wanna come for a visit.
Looks really cool but...we need to see the kitchen and bathroom!
Paint on his *pants*, not paints
I particularly like the dog on the bed
Gorgeous. I love this. Plants + beams = perfection. I have some of that bedding and now I immediately need an airy canopy and paper lanterns.
I may or may not have been a homeowner ogler as well...
Agreed with Azeleasmoke! What a beautiful apartment, gorgeous owner, and adorable dog. Makes me want to buy a lot more houseplants!
Loved everything. Including the owner and his dog. And his pants.
I'm stealing your idea for the paper lanterns above the bed. LOVE it!!
WOW!!!!!! I'm speechless...what a great space! Love the art work, the architecture and the attention to detail! I wanna live there!!!! :)
Hmm, I'm curious about the white bridge table across the foot of the bed. I thought the idea of those was that you could slide them down and away, but because the bed has the canopy posts, you'd actually have to lift it up and away to move it? Unless you sleep with it there, which seems problematic. Apart from that, that is a seriously romantical bedroom.
Ummm there aren't even words. . .well maybe a few. Chandelier and plants remind me of fireworks. . .freeze-frame moments of color all over. Well done. Everything feels so natural as if it grew up and in that space.
One word: RRRRRRRyan!
Ryan is very talented. The space he designed is amazing.
I could do without the cowhides - they are distracting somehow and inconsistent with the rest of the style in that cozy, otherwise fab living room.
the bed with lanterns....wow wow wow WOW!
PERFECT!!
i love everything. everything everything everything.
Looove your place! All those plants... love!
Everything here is gorgeous. The home, the concept, the designer himself. I'm crazy about this entry! I hate that I don't know you personally because you're a man with my own taste. Love it! Good luck in the contest!
Love this! And the funny thing is that objectively it's not the kind of thing I'm usually drawn to. Only this one really works for me. I think it's partly the rich colors and the warm wood tones - floor and those amazing beams, and there's also some quality of natural light that I really find pleasing.
Thanks for providing me with some great ideas! You did an outstanding job pulling this small space together. It's elegant yet rustic which makes your home absolutely charming! Well done!
Great taste! Even more awesome in person! Well done Sir.
Wow...like a fantasy home!
what a fine taste you've got Ryan!!!!!
love the space and design [not so much a fan of the bear rug, though...i think it covers the great hardwood floor and makes the space seem smaller]. at any rate, this should make the finals!
LOVE THIS HOME. I love the wrmth, the clean lines, the colors. Well thought outs.
Loved this space!!. My heart actually skipped a beat. I too, like many other viewers was disappointed with the other entries. Great juxtaposition of the white sofa, chair & light fixture with the weathered wooden table and ceiling beams. Then the burst of color with the forsynthia and art .........I look to see you as a finalist.
Way to go, Ryan!! You are so talented! What a perfectly curated home. Bravo.
I LOVE it. And you didn't even need the split screens or any other gimmicks. Beautiful, and favourited. I LOVE IT!
Wow, amazing aesthetic. So perfectly balanced. And, yes, the dog is adorable. I really like his bed, too. Does he let you sleep there with him?
Ryan, another great job, I especially love the lanterns. Good luck! ~Olga
Really great!!! Where did you get that lovely couch? And your dog is beyond adorable:)
I love everything about this apartment! Great job!!
Love, love, love this apartment!!!
I appreciate the level of organic presence in the living space. If not present in the objects themselves it is reflected in the tones that are used throughout the apartment. It shows that you inject yourself into your surroundings. The summation of the statement made by the space is in harmony with your concept of low cost design infused with sentimental value. The re-use of objects provide a utilitarian, as well as aesthetically appropriate display. Sitting in this apartment would evoke the stories that these objects have all experienced. It is art that inspires art. I like what you have done. …As for those who question the date of the building, your capacity to comprehend reality is being held captive by your ignorance. While I am sure the date is correct, its importance in this manner is of artistic value and should be considered primarily for setting purposes. Please do not let your mind strangle your heart.
Ryan, So proud of a fellow Long Islander!!!!
Amazing eye! Your space is just raw lovely life. If you need a dog sitter or duster or something...
Love your place - this is definitely my NUMBER ONE so far! But you didn't have to pose in your painting clothes to prove you were an artist ;)
Also, your bed is to die for - I just pinned it for inspiration!
Love it. Love the natural elements mixed with the industrial pieces. Love the coffee table. And he's even a romantic - the bed is lovely. The first one I've favorited so far. Kudos, my friend.
I love your entry:):):):) everything is appealing, the layout, the colors, furniture choices, the ambience, the hot owner):):):) yours is the best!
Awesome!!!! Love everything about the place, especially the chandelier and blue chair.
Best. Apartment. Ever.
-felttipjar- the chair in the kitchen was an estate sale find, it is a blue linen- great blog
I omitted the kitchen because the landlord hasnt touched it since 1979! the cabinets were falling off the wall when we moved in 2 years ago (not a pretty site).
the lanterns over bed are decorative although I have stuffed xmas lights in them.
the ikea table at the foot of the bed doesnt get in the way (I have a low bed) it serves as a stand when I stream tv on my laptop.
*The sign on the front of the home states 1668*
Thanks for all the great comments, It feals good to have your hard work appreciated
This is amazing. I love it.
Wonderbar!!
Design Star Is Born
I know this works because it makes me want to purchase a bunch of first editions and sip on scotch served up clean.
Nice
Where were you when I was 23? Great Job! Love what you did.
great furniture! I love the sofa, coffee table & the details on the dining table. your entry has personality...its not just about the architecture. overall, love your apartment!
First off: MARRY ME. Two: such a beautiful space for a boy! Ryan, does "SAMUEL" KNOW you have his foot locker (trunk?)? LOVE the dog--I have four. Like I said, marry me already!! Come to the dark side!
Ryan, you have blown my world and my mind with your space! I thought I was happy with my top 7 favorites but you, you took this competition to a whooooole new level of awesome! Not only is your space sexy, it's cmfortable, it's stylish, it's..........not something that I would expect.....fromt a guy. No offense.
I agree with LANAMAL, and every other persont hat thinks your place is just as gorgeous as you are. AT can you feature him in your Hot guys post too?? Thanks!
Awesome place. Where is that nightstand with the hanging lamp from? It's incredible!
This is my favorite Small Cool entry ever. Really - ever. Thank you!
Love it
All I can say is I give it a F for Fabulous. I'd love you to come to my house and help me out. Everything in my world is beige so I need so pops of color. That dog of yours is a beauty too. You have a wonderful talent. Keep up the good work. Piera
Totally inspiring....great use of the eclectic...can you come do my home?
I love this house! It's so cozy and well put together. It's unique and personal yet sophisticated and beautiful! You've got my vote!
beautiful as well as classy elegant clean looking and eclectic a real personal creative touch
you have my vote.
Really loving the fact that as an artist your genius and vision inspires you to create and incorporate your art into this living theme that you've obviously conceptualized from scratch! Beautiful! You've made it to breathe naturally without the constraints of something forced or contrived.
The driftwood table is a testimony to your ability to see the beauty in the random riff raff of nature, but not only that, you've somehow managed to sculpt it into a practical and integral component of your furnishing, this expession and need to express through the language of your creations, is the mark and spirit of a true artist. Well done!
So layered, luscious and beautiful! You get my vote!
You have created a sublime harmony with the existing architecture. Good luck.
Great example of small, cool. You've taken the limited number of things in your apartment to a very high level of potential. Also, I could see myself enjoying this space from any point in the apartment, instead of having to sit/stand in a particular area.
ryan -- just saw what you commented on matt's well curated space and i had no idea that the people ahead of you also had a popular blog! so sorry because I also love your space (and favorites it a long time ago)! there are so many wonderful moments in your home and it is stunning! there are a few more hours and you're pretty damn close but no matter, you (and matt and i'll throw myself in there) did pretty awesome! congrats!
michelle from michelle's dream space
This was truly a blank canvas and the artist created an amazing home, using color and recreating items that many would have pictured as junk found on the street or an empty lot.
The ability to do this is so outstanding. He is a winner already. Just read the comments above.
Your home is this year's winner for me. Congrats!
speechless .... wow .... wow just WOW !!!!
