Name: Sabrina
Location: Fort Greene — Brooklyn, New York
I have a small, 450 square foot studio that opens onto my own private terrace that is half the size of my apartment! It functions as my outdoor living room, and I start and end each day out here, whether it's to have my coffee, read a book, entertain friends, or take a nap!
There are a lot of challenges to this space: air conditioner drips from the 15 floors above me, cigarette butts raining from the sky burning holes through my cushions, and wicked winds that keep blowing over my white divider. The divider is a work in progress, but I do have my eye on season-clearance patio umbrellas to help with the drips and butts and to provide some shade.
Challenges aside, I'm in love with this space. I have a view of the backyards of brownstones, and I can feel the energy of Fort Greene pulsating just beyond my view. Mornings here are so tranquil, and it's always a challenge to leave this space to get on with my day.
Thanks Sabrina!

Wow, this is such a pretty little place, no wonder you spend as much time as possible out there. I really love the colors of the larger pots, thanks for sharing.
Love it. We just moved into a smaller place with some outdoor space. It's worth having a little less space inside for a bit of space outside.
Many years ago, I was doing research in NYC and stayed at a convent sponsored guest house in Chelsea, in July. My room looked at the back spaces of many houses and each night I enjoyed watching the lights come on and people enjoy their outdoor space in the city. I love the idea of private spaces in a very public city.
Why is it I ALWAYS recognize brooklyn photos at first glance? Interiors & exteriors. I grew up in brooklyn and haven't been to too many places, There just is something so distinct about that place. Like you can smell the brooklyn air right through your computer screen...
I feel your pain about the "rain of cigarettes burning holes in your cushions" I also have had this problem. I live in the Village(NYC), and have a huge deck. My sofa has a nice burn hole in it. According to the city, the bldg owners are responsible and are guilty of two violations, creating a fire haazard and believe it or not...illegal dumping. Its a long slog if you wanna fight it...for me...i just put up with it.
I'm about to downsize to a smaller apartment with a great outdoor space, but the ground is covered in ugly worn old green carpeting. I love your outdoor flooring and border of rocks. Did you buy those tiles somewhere or did the terrace come that way? So inspiring!!
What a lovely space-I'm so envious-I don't have a stitch of outdoor space!
Well put together!
The tray that you have your bagel on reminds me of Pontypool tinware, which was produced in Wales during the 19th century, to imitate the imported Japanese papier mache items that were far too expensive for most people tp buy. The tinware offered the 'look'!!
Anyway, I am pleased that you are able to enjoy your tranquil little space, in spite of the butt-wielding (as in cigarettes) cretins on the floors above you!
Sorry, that should've been 'to buy'. I wouldn't usually worry about typing errors but I understand that 'tp' might actually mean something over on your side....?
Such a special space!
Thanks so much everyone! The flooring and border came that way, and the tray is from Etsy. I later bought a similar vintage trash can in the same style!
The cigarettes butts mainly occur when my neighbors have a guest over, I don't think it's my neighbors themselves...sigh! Thanks for the sympathy.
