Is It Safe To Put a Large Plant on Top of Refrigerator?

Good Questions

Q: I have many house plants outside on my porch. But here in Maine, it is getting close to cold enough to take them in. One, a big schifflera, is quite large. I will cut it back dramatically before I move it, but it will still be pretty big.

I live in a tiny apartment, and the only place I see to put it is on top of my fairly small Danby refrigerator (2' wide, 5' tall, 136 lbs). Will that be a safe thing to do? Many of the comments I've read have referred to keeping cast iron pans, or plants, or wine on top of the refrigerator, which makes me think that refrigerators are pretty strong! Please let me know if I can put the plant up there — it will look great, I will be able to water it (I have a stool!), and it will solve at least one of my plant problems. The rest will go on top of the bookshelves — that I am not worried about! Many thanks.
