Last week the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Summer Infant announced a voluntary recall of video monitors with electrical cords. The recall was prompted by two strangulation deaths and the fix consists of a permanent electrical cord warning label, additional cord wall-mounting security clips and revised instructions for safe installation. This sobering reminder about cord safety has us thinking about electronics in the nursery.
Here are a few ideas for safe installation of video monitors and other corded devices in the nursery.
- Wall mount video cameras a minimum of three feet away from the crib.
- Place the device on a tall bookshelf and drop the cord behind the shelf.
- Install a floating shelf or corner shelf to host the monitor.
Whatever solution, make sure that all cords are beyond your little one's reach. Consider wall fishing cables or using a cord cover or clips to secure cords to the wall.
How have you managed the cord conundrum in your nursery?

White Enamel Four-P...
all cords are at least 5 feet away from her bed and 4 feet away from the windows. and there is noting on the walls near her bed.
I just read thisand it would seem to methat this would make it difficult to have a baby monitor. Ours is secured to the wall and I think thT he can't reach the cord but I'm sure that at some pint that the cord is three feet from the crib since the outlet is located behind the crib. Any ideas on how to make this safer?
We have our monitor right over the baby's crib. We have a cord cover that goes from the camera to the outlet and then we have a big box outlet cover to secure the adapter.
We have put the (audio) monitor all the way across the room, and it picks up sound just fine. (We got rid of the outlet behind the crib by putting a solid plate over it...once the crib mattress was lowered, he would have had direct access and plenty of time to defeat the child-safe plugs.)
On one wall, we grouped cords together and clipped them all to the wall in one spot (iPod dock, air filter, etc.), and brought them up the wall behind a shelf.
**Sigh...** With baby #2 on the way, I guess I have to start thinking about this stuff again!
