Childproofing your home can be antithetical to stylish living, especially ugly prefab baby gates to block the stairs. The decorating equivalent to buying a minivan. But these childproofing measures are crucial for the safety of your early crawlers and walkers.
Well, Lauren and Josh decided that it is possible to embrace style and safety at the same time.
They were inspired by a post they saw here on Apartment Therapy about home made baby gate magic over at Blue Ant Studio. But here's the really impressive part: Not only did Josh build his own fabulous looking baby gates for the entryways to the stairs, he installed wood slats across the entire staircase, which had been treacherously exposed.
The end result is stunning. And I reckon it is a great idea even for those without kids who have precariously built stairwells (minus the actual stair gates themselves, obviously)
Safe. Practical. And Gorgeous. You CAN have it all!

Love it. Not only safe but a true art piece.
While certainly stylish, I'm not sure they are that safe for toddlers.
The horizontal rails would seem to make a perfect climbing ladder for a child. Which kind of defeats the purpose and makes them even more unsafe.
Almost makes me want to have kids. Almost.
Kids will climb anything, and the slats are very close together, so it doesn't look like a ladder to me!
So pretty, those plastic baby gates are horrid (and surprisingly difficult to operate!).
I am tired of all the minivan hating! My Odyssey is dope and I'm not ashamed of it.
Beautiful!!! I'd still probably go with vertical slats, because I'm paranoid like that (and the 60s split-level I grew up in had an upstairs deck with horizontal slats---oh so fun, and so terrifying for our parents)!
@Dorie: OK, you're right. I am a hypocrite! I not only own a Honda Odyssey but I LOVE it. Double stroller without collapsing? yes!

Doesn't look like kids could climb those slats, but make them vertical instead if you are concerned. I think they look great.
I love the little girl's outfit ~ why not meet the day with some glam!
I love the horizontal slat look, but we have a little kid who's a climber, and he WILL climb them - regardless. Some kids aren't climbers, however.
Some kids will climb the railing no matter what it's made of.
