- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I do not view my small home as a limitation, but as an opportunity!
I have turned my apartment into an art project, curating a combination of styles that transcend the boundaries of physical walls.
Living room: European classic
Bathroom: International (Mexican Fiesta)
Hallway: Modern
Bedroom: Rustic vintage
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- With compact living quarters, a New York City apartment owner must find new and innovative design solutions. Creating a fresh theme for each room, with hints of connecting design elements, allows for a natural circulation and seemingly limitless space.
Achieving a beautiful and unique home doesn't require large amounts of money or square footage; just a touch of inspiration and a boost of motivation. In my choices in décor, I aimed for both charming and personal. The carefully composed display of artwork and decorative accents throughout turns each room into tasteful eye candy.
As a young collector, I steer away from procuring art of a certain theme or genre; I purchase what I like. After all, I’m the one that has to live with it! The furniture was sourced at local antique fairs, vintage outlets and design showrooms…Ikea for the staples.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL BATHROOM!
I don't have a sense of this space at all, besides the floor plan. Why is a huge dining table with chairs in front of the tv?
This is such a cute place. I love the outdoor space and the exposed brick and beautiful wood floors make it feel so cozy! Would love to see a picture of the little kitchen...do you have a seating area in the living room or do you use your dining table and chairs as your seating?
I love how the exposed brick adds a unique patina to the space. Your choice of artwork creates a beautiful contrast.
Mark (Great Wall of Canvas)
I want that bedroom so bad...
house tour please!
Fabulous bedroom, and I could basically live on that patio!
Great space, I especially love your bathroom. The decision to have clear shower curtains so the attention remains on the wall details was an excellent one.
Now AT I'd like to ask about the photo situation. It appears the last photo is two photoshopped together. I believe I noticed the same in another entry. I have no problem with this and enjoy seeing more of great spaces like these, but aren't the rules you're only allowed to have five individual photos? Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Excellent use of space, color, and natural elements; such as the exposed brick and bare floor. The deck and foyer area are well balanced as to respects to the rest of the interior charm. Bedroom is looks like a tranquil sanctuary, great job Samantha
I am liking what I see so far. Like JasmineIsDomestic, I also couldn't get a good sense of space. AT should do a HT on you, too!
So, do people sit at the dining table to watch TV? Seems uncomfortable.
Love the walls. Wish the couch/lounge area was showed....
Lightbulbs! Love the items you've chosen to display throughout your home!
Can't wait to see more pics!
Instead of a picture of a wall of light bulbs, why not a picture of the kitchen to complete the flow of the rooms?
I really like what I see...but I don't have a sense of the space either..would love to see a full house tour!
I also wish AT would figure out a way for the submitter to caption the photos that way we know what we are looking at..good suggestion?
This space is beautiful! And I don't see why people would question the sense of space. Maybe she entertains more than vegging watching TV. I was thinking the same thing for my place. I'd rather have a big dining room table to have people over for dinner because I hardly watch television! Love this place and would love to see a house tour.
Stunning! Want to see the kitchen...
I think the layout is presented in a thoughtful manner. This apartment seems so much larger 350 square feet! I think the clear shower curtain is genius for making the bathroom appear more open and large. Having an outdoor space is also amazing! The only thing that left me a bit puzzled was the picture frame behind the TV. The brick wall is to die for!
Love the brick throughout you place! The bathroom is awesome!!
Love the brick, and omg could I spend hours in that tub? All it's missing is a year's worth of New Yorker magazines.
Wow! Your home is amazing! Great job!
Beautiful, deserves a full home tour.. very few pictures...
Love the brick wall an bathroom.
I think it is a great idea to have a table with padded chairs rather than a couch if the space is too small for both. Some floor pillows are good enough if you want to veg out and watch a movie, but I find I often have the TV going while I'm working on a project. This is a very pretty little place, and I'm thinking the rent is still more than I have ever paid. That brick, that balcony/terrace space, cha-ching!
I'm floored by how spacious this small apartment seems! Interesting idea to have no couch, it works well. I'm guessing the light installation is in the foyer? Love it! Definitely deserving of more votes!
was going to vote for this one but there is not kitchen photo...so I changed my mind. I don't want to see a close up photo of a wall of light bulbs!
I don't mind the lack of couch for TV watching. Some people don't watch enough TV to sacrifice valuable space for a couch.
Thanks for the comments. I love the feedback!
The 5 photo limit made it difficult to exhibit every detail of the apartment. Since the layout is wide-spread I had to be selective about what to showcase. Ultimately, I honed in on the ‘cool’ factor - what makes my home unique is not a concentrated placement of furniture, but the individual style expressed in each room and the selection of artwork that makes these walls pop.
I would LOVE to do a House Tour with Apartment Therapy and to give all of its amazing readers a closer look into the arrangement and intimate details of each room.
K.LUNA: Thank you! I used to have a very girly bedroom in my previous home, but decided on a more warm and natural vibe. This room is a place I can kick-back after a long day, but still feel luxurious.
RAAINA: The television is convertible to hanging, so when hung on the wall, the antique gold frame fits perfectly around it, creating a stylish and ironic decorative boarder.
MIMICHAN: I appreciate the support. Spread the word ; )
COLETTA: Sure wish I could share more with you! The choice of this photo is based on my desire to show the ‘cool’ component of my happy home. The bulbs are an original installation, and the vintage poster is a Badia Vilato from the 1930’s. I am sorry it didn’t strike your fancy – but I guess that’s why they say art is subjective!
LYONSTILL: What a beautiful compliment. When I first moved in, three years ago, the bathroom was too bland for my taste. I don’t know about you, but when I’m in the tub I want to feel like I am on VACA! So I sourced these tiles from Mexico and replaced all of the hardware with hotel-grade appliances. No every day is like I’m on holiday!
Love it!! The exposed brick gives a huge cool factor advantage :) I actually really like having the slightly-offset picture frame behind the tv, it makes the wall-mounted tv less jarring (I always feel like tvs take so much away from the design in a room, but entertainment centers can take up so much space). I thought it was a clever way of incorporating design into the tv mounting.
I too hope for a full tour - I'm curious about the other parts. Like what are those things mounted on the doorway, pinatas? What about the lightbulb wall - they light up, right? (cool!)
Well done! Favorited!
This place has so much character you could put a plastic deck chair in it, call it done, and it'd still be fabulous.
Wow! Truly a teeny work of art. Shows what can be done in even the smallest of spaces. Love the wrestling masks and the bulbs!!
I love the soft and warm colors. Very much "at home".
I really like a lot of things about this place, but the luchador masks pinned up on the wall is what pushed me to definitely vote for it (then again, I have a similar thing going on in my own spare bedroom/office - along with crazy hats - so I may be biased). Fantastic place!
LOVE this apartment! WANT this apartment. You may expect us with our
cat, two dogs and a possibly a mother-in-law. GREAT JOB Samantha.
You have a terrific and playful design sense.
XO Candy and Hugo
Such an interesting combination of colors and textures!
Awesome place! Wish you could help me design mine!
really how valid is a vote when it's just your facebook friends. rather lessens any accolades. I think you made the best of the bathrooms if you must live in a rental with those horrible tiles. The living room looks more american suburban formal than European to me but what do I know, I'm just a European. Odd combination of a dining table & then that massive TV.
Nice composition(s)!
That brickwork! Amazing what post-modern woman-man yearns for. A little brick work, a pot of earth, a fleeting evocation of our genetic memory of what it is like to be alive.
Though small, the balance of color and texture with the exposed brick walls, beautiful wood floors and choice of furnishings make this space tops on the aesthetics scale.
There is a lot to see here. I want to see the rest. House Tour please!
Charming + cool. Would love a house tour so that I could see more details of the apartment! Love the deck.
