Paint - you can buy it from small hardware shops (ok...) to giant home warehouse stores (no thanks). We figure we'll buy it from a family owned paint store - makes sense, right? These guys know what they are doing.
We always do our own painting and like to experiment with color so we are fairly frequent paint purchasers. We've never gone wrong with shop pictured here, Sappano's on Halsted. We've asked lots of questions; they are always nice and have good advice on how to do what you need to do.
And what you need to do it. They have paint (of course), stains, varnishes, sealers. They also carry glosses, glazes, texturing mediums, and venetian plasters. Gold leaf foils, too. Oh and wallpaper and fabric. If you can apply it to the walls of your place, you can probably get it here.
They have tons of application tools from basic rollers to quail feathers, clean up solutions and floor protection goods.
We've heard they also offer power tool rentals, a great idea for sometime DIY'ers or those of us who don't want to give up precious storage space for tools we only use now and then.
Lines include: Paint from Ralph Lauren, Benjamin Moore, Pratt & Lambert, Muralo, ICI and Martin Senour. Fabrics from Robert Allen and Designer's Guild. Wallpaper from Tibault, Waverly and Pierre Deux.
Other Chicago Locations: 1300 W. Wabash 312.663.0700, and 3545 N. Kedzie 773-463-3050.
Note: Sappano's runs a website, PaintPlus.com. It's a good site but it doesn't have any info on any of Sappano's brick and mortar shops in particular - its more of an e-commerce site. Give Sappano's a call with questions on the stores/hours/selection available.

I've been to the Home Depot on Halsted, but hadn't discovered this shop. Thanks for the tip!
Sappano's is king. If you are a business they also offer a discount of sorts and will allow you to purchase spray paint etc...
This place has better customer service:

But the point is, Sappano's is family-owned.
What a lovely store front. Very nice.
The Sappano's on Kedzie is good also--not as upscale, but we've bought a lot of paint from them. However, I think their hours (esp. on Sundays) are odd--they close kind of early. So call first.
I used Sappanos paint some years ago, because I lived close enough to the halsted store that I could carry it home without a car. The color was so perfect most visitors to my apartment touched the walls and commented on the beautiful paint.
I had forgotten about this store and drove to Menards to get paint for my new condo. I am very sorry about that! The Menards paint never mixed properly despite a quick return for a second mix and it covered in uneven color so I will need to repaint.
Off to Sappanos for some really good paint on Halsted which has parking!

The person who offered better service at the JC Licht place, must be an employee of theirs. They put too much info down for whata regular person would have written. Also, JCL is orporate owned by Benjamin Moore. They alsohave the same type of people working there who give varied customer service. they have less of a product mix btw, because they only sell Benjamin Moore.
Sappanos is the place for paint, wallpaper, and all window treatments.
I only use sappanos. I've bought my paint there for every property I've lived in and all my rentals. The service and product mix is nothing less then stellar. A big fan and loyal customer and happy to support a family owned biz.
