HGTV host and interior designer Sarah Richardson shares her family's island cottage with CountryLiving, and the style incorporates some modern elements with a beachy seaside vibe.
Though the house is new construction, Richardson wanted to give the place a sense of history, and so incorporated salvaged materials into her kitchen design, and lots of antiques elsewhere in the home. She carried a blue-green palette throughout the rooms, adding pops of red in the master bedroom to give a slightly different vibe while keeping with the theme in the rest of the house. A restful guest bedroom keeps the colors to a minimum in order to highlight the stunning natural scenery beyond the windows.

she truly has a brilliant idea for design. love her work!
Sarah Richardson and Martha Stewart are the only TV designers allowed to give me a surprise makeover (I made my husband raise his right hand and swear this to me.) I adore her - mostly because she's willing to spend $$$ on custom work :)
You can watch all the episodes of Sarah's Summer Home on HGTV.com that shows how she did this whole cottage room by room. I pretty much watched them all through in one sitting while working on my finals for grad school. Plus, she's pretty much hilarious.
Sarah is my role model.
I used to love watching this show until the episode where her husband flew in some materials for the renovation in his private sea plane. Then it immediately felt like unless I was private-sea-plane rich, anything close to this was out of my league.
Sarah is hands down my favourite designer! Her website has a WEALTH of information and inspiration. http://www.sarahrichardsondesign.com/
Her show is one of the few left on HGTV worth watching.
Just a small correction: The cottage which was first owned by Sarah's husband, Alexander wasn't a new build, it was built onto.
The Sarah/Tommy team are my absolute favorite designers!!! They're not doing Tuscan themes, or Moroccan nonsense. Just great solid design. And I just LOVE when they go shopping! They see potential in everything! I love every room they've ever done, and can't get enough of them! xxoo
Sugarbakers, that's hilarious. I think I agree with you, but there's not much risk of me getting a surprise makeover in any event, so I haven't planned ahead and gotten promises from friends or family like you have. :)
She is my favorite designer. I like how she uses used and antique furniture and makes it new again with finishes and upholstery. Yes, she is one of the few designers worth watching on HGTV.
I cannot for the life of me understand WHY people think that if a designer has more money than they do, there is nothing to be gained. Sarah's designs are chalk full of attainable ideas & her process in thinking things through is very beneficial...no matter how much money you do or don't have.
I love all of Sarah's shows, but her old show Design Inc was really great! Sarah would often show how you can dress up very inexpensive white subway tile or how to completely change thrift store furniture into something beautiful for very little money. She has great taste!
Sarah is an institution in my neck of the woods.Southern Ontario,Canada.I've nothing against what she does.It IS beautiful,in it's own way.Certainly attainable for the average person. And that would be my criticism of her work.It doesn't and never has evolved in any way, shape or form.
Open door....WOW.....it's Sarah, with her sponsors. You can go anywhere on the web and see people do what she does. It's far from a 'good thing'.I would not compare her to Martha.Whom I think could teach her a few things.Like if your so rich ...how come your house is soooo boring.
She isn't someone I would hire.If you like her shows, you can watch them online at HGTV.
Tommy is the star of that team, Sarah just makes it look like they are her ideas.
@CanadianTired - someone has a crush on Tommy!! :)
