Name: Sarah Rodenhouse
Location: Silver Lake, California
Size: 2 Bedrooms 3 Bathroom house
Years lived in: 2 years— Own
Sarah lives in a cozy bohemian charmer right in the hills of Silver Lake. Her style mixes up new and vintage accessories and furniture. She loves color, texture and a home full of artwork and music. With the help of her friend, interior designer Sally Breer, she was able to create a comfortable and stylish place to call home.
Sarah was lucky when she found this house: not only did she love the floor plan and paint colors (from the previous owners), she also found a place with ample outdoor space. When I asked her what the most significant thing in her home was she stated that it was not only a mix of sentimental belongings like photos from her grandparents weddings, but also her love of the cuckoo clock she brought home from Berlin.
She has an amazing outdoor family room space with a great view of hills. "I'd certainly have to say that having and making an outdoor space special was absolutely essential for me. I really wanted to have a fun and eclectic backyard to enjoy the incredible Southern California weather."
She has furnished her house with a mix of new accessories and some vintage remastered pieces. I love her use of color and texture. She really went for a fun palette of hues in all different tones, which I feel brings a sense of vibrance to each room. With a formal guest room with en-suite bathroom, she can accommodate friends and family very easily.
"For me, I'd have to say comfort! I'm always thinking of ways to make my home more cozy and warm by adding fabric, rugs and candles."
I'd like to thank Kevin Mincin for introducing me to Sarah. When he suggested I go see her home, I knew it would be a great home to tour.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: vintage, bohemian, industrial
Inspiration: I'm really inspired by things I see while traveling, pieces with history to them and music actually!
Favorite Element: I love my living room because it's so cozy with the fireplace and a great room for entertaining with the turn table and speaker set up.
Biggest Challenge: As silly as it might sound, picking the right shade of gray for the living room was a lot harder than I anticipated! It had to be repainted a few times...thanks to my mom for helping me decide on the perfect color and my dad for getting it on the wall and ceiling.
What Friends Say: "Great Feng Shui" and my favorite comment is always "it feels like home". I love for my friends to feel comfortable when they're spending time in my home.
Biggest Embarrassment: I guess I don't really have one...I've had lots of fun with this place so far.
Proudest DIY: I think I'd have to say my DJ table. It adds a fun pop of color to the living room and I love the cute hardware I used.
Biggest Indulgence: Probably my outdoor space. It so easily translates from day to night. It's a great place to relax and appreciate the beautiful California weather and my delicious grapes during the day and perfect for enjoying a glass of wine with the fire pit and a movie projected on the neighbor's garage wall in the evening.
Best Advice: If you're like me and have a lot of hand-me-downs and random pieces from past living spaces, have fun with tying them all together, and when that doesn't work give my friend Sally Breer a call. She has really done an amazing job with finishing touches and helping me get some great major pieces to fill in the blanks!

Thanks,Sarah!

Tour from 2009?
Love this house, and all the small details like her bedroom wallpaper, teal colored poofs and the cool white elephant over the fireplace.
The gray you chose to paint the living room IS great! What's the paint color?
I like the house, I would change the kitchen table and chairs but if the tour is 3 years old it might look different inside in the meantime.
Such a wonderful job of using a lot of vintage furniture and accessories without the feeling being dated or contrived.
NOT A THREE YOUR OLD TOUR?? we shot this a couple weeks ago :)
There's so much I like about this place (the bedroom wallpaper, the yellow lamp by the fireplace, the teal poufs, the industrial bar cart, the "window seat", etc.), but I find myself hung up on two annoying little details:
1) Limes in the apothecary jars by the fireplace. They scream "staging" to me. They're gonna be a fruit-fly fiesta in about 2 days!
2) The interesting white candle-holders crammed on the second shelf on either side of the fireplace (right next to #1). They feel like they need some breathing room since the candles are just barely clearing the shelf above. I assume you move them elsewhere before lighting them — unless that's your "fire corner" in the Feng Shui!
Where did she get those awesome blue poifs she is sitting on? Must have!!!
Poufs are probably CB2. They change colors every season.
Really great home. You must be very neat to have that rug under the dining table, though.
looks like a great backyard party place
I love that this really feels like a home not a show pony. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. :) It is very cozy and sweet.
Nicely done and you don't seem like a hippy girl to me. lol
So beautiful! I love the bedroom. What sofa is that? It's gorgeous!
I am in love with this woman! Gorgeous smile, long beautiful blonde curls and an amazing style... I'm sold. If this was a dating site, we could exchange pics of our interiors, lol! I'll show you mine if you show me- oh wait, you just did...
Wow!! Very nice and simple...that is my type of living, just plain and clean.. nothing overdone with clutter and very outragious colors..I like how she made the screen room into a nice sitting room.. i thought it was the livingroom, until i saw the living room,, alot of open area,,i like how she has 3 bathrooms,, i love her bathroom and her closet,, with the washing machine inside it with a door that leads to outside,,,neat little extras that go with the house,,, thanks Sarah!!!
lovely house, I like her seat, isn't it ball chair?
Its not my style but I fell in love with this home! Sometimes its the indefinable that makes something special.
I would love to know where the bedroom headboard came from. :-)
LOVE the style in this house. Is that art work of Biggie in the one bedroom? What a fun touch!
I would love to know where the couch and coffee table are from in the living room.
Thank god for that inspiring teal room... I moved into a space I can't change much and one room has dark teal damask wallpaper. I am at a constant loss. I like what you did! Will be taking some inspiration from you there...
Love the house, though I am amazed that there are people in the world who are so tidy that a white rug under the dining room table isn't an absolute disaster.
World market has a similar pouf, too.
Where's the pic of the outdoor space? Would love to see the biggest indulgence since its my favorite part of the nest and a must have with every move!
Agreed - grey is the most difficult color. Subtle undertones can throw off a whole room... Beautiful home, lovely colors and GREAT style. Love this whole tour!!
I adore your home. It's perfectly you, yet the style translates to the everyday non-designer. It's very accessible and inspirational. I love the quirky touches. And MY MY your craftiness with the DJ table!!
I am in LOVE with the wall color in the office. It reads like pale lilac with gray undertones. Do you mind sharing the paint color with fellow AT fans? :)
Everything is my style in this house, needless to say there isn't anything I don't like or want.
love it all
where is the "buffet" in the dining room from? thanks!
Gorgeous home and gorgeous girl. I'm not crazy about the dining table and chairs but love the DJ setup and the Biggie print is a nice touch.
Light, bright, excellent paint choices, looks so inviting.. comfortable and cozy, nice mix of old, new..wonderful unexpected pops of color..great attention to detail..loved the 'HIP' 'HOP' and your dj set-up..Very nice outdoor space..Thanks for sharing your lovely home..

I believe the wallpaper in the bedroom that you referenced is actually a stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils. I've been pondering using it for a while.....
I found a DIY for the knit pouf! http://www.flaxandtwine.com/2012/04/tweed-pouf-easy-chunky-knit.html
yes, I'm wondering about the gray paint color and/or formulation myself. Do we have an answer to this question? Thank you :)
