Thats way cool!!
Nice crib. I do find the word Sexy a bit inappropriate for a baby's room though. Like putting two year olds in heels or similar.
i don't find the "sexy" inappropriate at all - it's in the living room where the baby happens to sleep. i also don't see how it equates to "putting two year olds in heels". it's a piece of art. would Rubenesque nudes be inappropriate as well?
I could be wrong, but I think the SEXY (which I love, btw) is in the living room, not the nursery. Of course, the little one can't read...yet.
when i first saw this, i agreed with seagreen. [and it reminded me of a story i saw on the news not long after i had my baby, about a guy raping a 6 month old...]
however, now that i realize, that it's in the living room, that's a different story. and i completely love the crib and the "sexy."
the woman has a piece of artwork that says sexy and your mind immediately goes to babies in heels or baby rape? wowsers.
Back to the question posed. If I were a master carpenter, I would totally make my own child's crib. But I'm not, so I'll leave it to the professionals to make a sturdy, cute, stylish crib for me.
More power to them for making a funky custom crib that fit in with their (obviously) funky style.
I would never do it, just because it looks like it took time and skill which I never have while pregnant. I'm not someone who really needs a custom designed anything now that there are more modern choices in the stores. I think it's cool they did what they wanted but I am happy with a mass marketed crib and to spend the extra time on something else like sleeping. I'm lazy like that.
I'm not huge on the sexy sign, but then again, I think anything that SAYS sexy just isn't. But, to each their own.
The crib is cool. I'm all for hand-made things!
The odds are, they will figure out a way to turn it into a single bed when the child is old enough - and having it mean something to them for a long time.
Please can someone delete the katiecupcake comment. That makes me feel sick! The sign is fine, that comment is not!
mummymaegs- I do believe it goes to show that watching the news isn't always good for you!
oh, sorry- i stand corrected- as i clearly didn't realise this wasn't the baby's room. obviously my comment was not on the spot.
My first thought was "well, that is different" and then that a reminder of adult appeal would be nice to have about a year in. I would have it in the adult bedroom so the home has a vibe that feels more inclusive, but all the same I thought this was an amusing contrast to the baby sugar cookie. Long may the parents find this living room suits their life and good luck to them.
I can't resist saying, though, that I would have been glaring at that sign at 3am with a crying baby!
I'm missing the point as to why it was necessary to raise the crib over the sofa... you can't sit on the sofa now, so why do it? There are other ways to fit a crib into a living room, ways that do not involve raising a crib to an awkward and possibly dangerous height.
As a baby, I too slept in the living room (my parents had a tiny apartment); they put the crib behind the sofa, and in front of the wall. It was possible to access from the sides, and having the sofa in front of the crib cut down any light shining into the crib.
The biggest problem I have with these sorts of home-grown solutions is that they often unwittingly create safety issues.
(And how long is it going to take for people to get the message about crib bumpers? The authors of the most exhaustive study of death and injury due to crib bumpers stated unequivocally that there is no reason sufficient to justify their use.)
i am thinking that the " sexy " signage was there before the baby. and being in the living room its totally different. this site usually has decorated baby rooms so it was a shocker and i stared in confusion for a moment. baby plus sexy ....no that dosent go together....then I read. i would be too scared to make my own crib as i would not be sure it was safe.
Let's all just get over the "sexy" thing and not invoke child rapists or ridiculous baby clothing trends. Let's just assume it's something that the parents like for whatever reason, maybe it's an inside joke, maybe it has sentimental purpose or whatever. And let's all just shut up and call it an awesome night light.
holy lord people are always out to start drama somewhere.
super happy baby! she's a cutie and i love the name sasha. it was a contender for our little girlie. it's fun to watch this couple working together. they seem relaxed and competent. and sexy. ;)
fridawolf-totally agree, they make DIY look effortless- great video.
Very tacky IMHO. I'm all for "modern" but this is just not attractive in any way. The sexy and the furniture arrangement.
Hi all,
just wanted to drop in and clarify some of the comments posted here about the crib we built for Sasha, as my wife and I were a little shocked by the nature of some of them.
First off, and I think most would agree, that the mere insinuation that the "SEXY" sign might in some way lead to the rape of a six month old, or to dressing a 2 year old in high heels is really a twisted idea. If this is what you comes to mind when you see a sign that says "SEXY", well uh… whatever…. We are graphic designers, and love all things that relate to typography. We found that sign on the street one day, in perfect working order, and thought to ourselves that it was a great find (before we had Sasha). I can assure you there's no hidden meaning or "weird" connotation here. Sexy can be said about so many things. If your husband says "hey honey, you look really sexy in that dress", do you run and cover your child's ears? probably not.
Considering the recent 2.1 million crib recalls, we actually feel great about having built our own crib. It's a very simple design, really as basic as it gets. It might not win design awards, but it was really fun to make it ourselves. Before embarking on our little project, we did all the research about safety standards, paying particular attention to any potential hazards such as the spacing between the bars, the height, and so on. The legs are made from custom-designed steel tubes, powder coated, with casters, so that we can move the crib around. It's solid, and will not tip over. The mattress is as "green" as it gets, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, etc. Heck, I wish they had a large version of it for adults. We can assure you that this is one the safest crib you'll ever come across.
Before we had Sasha, we had found the green sofa (and matching orange chair), and didn't want to do away with the set, as these were rare pieces. So we built the crib around the sofa. And considering that "quality cribs" can cost anywhere between $500 and $1200, we saved a bunch by making it ourselves (final cost was $189, including the legs).
And to clarify something else: All of this is not in a living room, this is Sasha's room. It might not be everybody's idea of a nursery or child's room (and we're totally cool with that), but she absolutely loves it in there. Not shown in the photos are countless little toys, books, flashcards, building blocks, dolls, and all of the kind of things you'd think make a fun little universe for a child. She's one of the happiest little girls we've ever seen, and fills our everyday with joy and constant amazement.
What really puzzles us, if anything, is that no one commented on the Philippe Starck "Gold Gun Lamps" in her room. What's up with that? ;-)
Cheers,
Sasha's parents.
Hi Sasha's Parents!
Thanks so much for your clarifications from the Ohdeedoh team! We double plus loved your designs (and are still unsure about a few of the above comments) and would love to do a full tour if you have interest and help show things off a little more!
Thanks for taking the time to clear up the misconceptions above!

Hi Sasha's parents- I apologise for any distress my comment may have caused. It's sometimes difficult to remember that behind each of the pictures are real people for whom every room has been a labour of love. I also certainly could not have predicted the way my comment was interpreted and the turns (for the worse) that it took. To each their own, and who cares what anyone else thinks really because it's your room and it works for you.
Sasha's parents -- i LOVE your crib. I spent hours looking for funky space saving cribs and was delighted when I finally came across yours. We live in a small nyc space and my husband's grandfather, a carpenter, offered to make us a similar crib to maximize usable space. Any chance you guys have plans you used and/or could pass on info re the custom designed steel tubes? Thanks!
