Home automation is a wonderful thing, and Savant is one of the few companies that does home automation well, really well. Recently we had the opportunity to visit their NY showroom for the debut of their new iPad app. We've been impressed with their iPhone app and frankly, their new iPad app simply blew us away.
Savant delivers home control and automation, multi-room audio/video, advanced digital audio and video processing, extremely flexible and scalable audio/video switching, digital media server and jukebox capabilities, and an array of integrated applications and services. One the things we love about Savant is that they are the only Apple-based control and automation solution. Savant was also the first home control and automation company to really grasp the potential of the iPhone and create an awesome app.
We were fortunate enough to be given a chance to try their new iPad app and even after several days of playing with it, we still find ourselves impressed by its capabilities. Instead of simply scaling up their iPhone/iPod Touch app, engineers at Savant took advantage of the additional screen real estate and native features of the iPad to create something worthy of the device.
Some of the new features of the iPad app include the Category and Services docks and the Navigation Bar. The Category Dock provides quick access to subsets of system functions, such as video, audio, settings and so on. The Services Dock is used to control specific service functions, such as lighting, climate and security. The Services Dock also provides easy access to house-wide states, such as active audio and video (AV) sources, current temperature and so on. The Navigation bar is used to quickly navigate between rooms, services and subsystems.
The iPad app also allows some customization features like user changeable backgrounds and user defined categories. On my iPad I used an image of my sister from my photo library as the icon for one of the user-defined categories.
One of the other features that we love about the iPad app is the built in support for Rosie Streamer. Rosie Streamer allows you to stream video content to your iPad from any of the media devices connected to the Savant system. We imagine this would be great for when a friend visits and wants to share a video they shot on their iPhone. Sharing that video would be as easy as docking the iPhone into a wall dock and accessing it from the iPad. Thanks to Rosie Streamer, the video could be streamed directly to the iPad or the television.
If you are in the market for a home control and automation system and decide against the DIY route, Savant is a great way to go. We love how well designed and elegant their solutions are while at the same time being incredibly easy to use and intuitive. Did we mention that they also play oh so nicely with all of your Apple products?
