It might seem a little early to talk about holiday storage, but this idea requires a little bit of advanced thought and action.
Are you a bulk retail or grocery shopper? Many sell their produce with these plastic clam shells and they're perfect for the storage of many items — especially holiday ornaments and fragile decorations!
These plastic bits of packaging are an easy thing to repurpose, but because of their bulk, don't really work out well for everyday items. They have a great deal of excess space between each compartment, but that does make them perfect for storage of breakable items.
In this case, Real Simple suggests their use for ornament storage. Start stockpiling (or asking your neighbor to do so for you) now so when things come out of storage in a few months, you'll have all new sturdy, safe packaging to keep them tucked away. Do you use this style of packing for anything else? Share your repurposing ways in the comments below!

Shaw's Original Fir...
That is such a good idea. My ornaments get SO tangled and it is a mess every year. This would take up a bit more space but it'd probably save way more time.
DARN - I just recycled one that some nectarines came in.
I was thinking at the time that I wished they didn't overpackage things so much. If I was re-using the package though, it would make it a bit more acceptable to me.
Egg cartons are great for smaller ornaments.
In early spring I start saving the plastic containers with lids that things like yoghurt comes in. When picnic season rolls around I can pack the food but when the picnic is over I don't have to worry about the clean up because the empties just gets thrown out.
These are also great for seed starting in spring as are paper egg cartons that you can just cut up and plant.
