besf question- Since I cannot find the credenza of my dreams for under 500.00 I am going to do the Ikea kitchen cabinet thing as well. How did you attach the two cabinets and did you put legs in the center. I don't like the look of a center legs but I am concerned with weight bearing in the center and how are they actually attached for freestanding credenza. Thanks

You'll need some cabinet connector screws from the local hardware store - You'll need 1 male and 1 female for each connection, and I'd place at least 4 sets (8 would be better) of them at the corners of the cabinets in the unused holes just above/below the door hinges - You'll want to clamp the cabinets together and use the pre-drilled shelf holes as a guide and drill through the cases to line them up perfectly.

To eliminate the need for a center leg, I'd supplement the panel connection with a 2-3 steel connecting plates at the bottom - front and back, attached lengthwise - snugly bolted through the bottoms of the cases.

Finally, I'd go to our local glass shop and get a piece of 1/4 or 3/8" glass cut to fit the top to give you a nice clean surface - You could use frosted glass (frosted side down), backpaint the glass white, or use a color as you'd like.
