Smallest, Coolest Apartment Contest

At Apartment Therapy, we've never accepted that a lack of space or budget are fatal when it comes to creating an inspiring home. From long experience in our own space-constrained apartment and many others, we've learned there are always solutions -- the small, genius improvisations -- that can make even the most modest of real estate lovable. Sure we drool over enormous designer lofts, but nothing inspires us more than the hand-made home, the stylish studio wedged into some urban crevice.

In fact, we've always suspected that, somewhere, there had to be one apartment that was so small and so cool we'd consider it the ultimate achievement in this category: the quintessential New York City apartment masterpiece.

With your help, we're going to find it this month...

Grand Prize
Second Place
Third Place
A weekend suite at New York's smallest coolest hotel, The Lowell.
(prize value: $2400)
A custom collection of the finest linens in the world from Matouk.
(prize value: $2000)
A free move and a year's storage courtesy of Chelsea Mini Storage.
(prize value: $1800)
The Lowell Hotel Matouk Chelsea Mini Storage

...and every entrant will get the official ApartmentTherapy.com trucker cap!

Yes, in an effort to prove that bigger is not always better and that taste trumps budget, we are inviting all comers to submit their apartments for careful consideration by our readers and a panel of distinguished judges. What's in it for the entrants? Only the chance to make your city proud and take your place in urban history. And then, of course, there are the fabulous prizes listed above.

So, if you've got the sort of special place that people gush over, or if you happen to know of such a place, read on! And spread the word.

Deadlines:
  • Sumbissions are being taken now and must be received by 12:00 p.m., Monday, April 18th, 2005.
    • All submissions will be posted on the site for review.
    • Important: Due to time and space constraints, we will consider only the first 30 legitimate submissions. So act now!
  • First Round voting ends 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 27th, 2005.
  • Presentation of "Final Five" begins Monday, May 2nd, 2005.
  • "Smackdown" voting starts on Thursday, May 5 and finishes at 2pm on Friday, May 6th.
  • Prize winners declared Friday, May 6th, 2005.
Groundrules:

What apartments are eligible?

  • The apartment must be no more than 500 square feet...
  • ...and it must be in New York City (that includes all five boroughs.)

There are no other restrictions. The apartment may be owned, rented, or even sublet. It can be designed by a professional or a weekend hobbyist. It might be tucked into a greenhouse on top of a building, or buried in a windowless basement.

  • (NB: all five finalist apartments will be professionally photographed on one of these dates: Friday, Saturday or Sunday - April 27, 28, 29. If you expect to make it to the finals (!), please be sure someone will be around on one of those dates to receive our photographer.)

How to enter?

Submit your apartment via email to smallestcoolest@apartmenttherapy.com

  • In the subject line of your email:
    • A name for your apartment, or an identifying intersection (i.e. 34th and 5th).
  • In the body of your email:
    • Your name (as you would like us to refer to you online.)
    • Location (neighborhood only.)
    • Size of your apartment in square feet (find sq. footage of each room - wall to wall - and total them up.)
    • Pitch (max. 100 words. Tell us why your apartment is great? What do your friends say when they come over? What is your favorite invention, and how long have you been working on the place? Do you have roommates? What prompted you to make the effort? And, if you've achieved your success on a limited budget, tell us that too. In short, include anything that might help readers appreciate your efforts.)
    • 10-20 good pictures - starting at your front door and moving to the back of your apartment (Please be sure that your image files are less than 250K.)
    • Your daytime phone (this will be used only for contacting finalists.)

  • NOTE: ApartmentTherapy.com will not share your name, email, phone number, or any other personal information with anyone other than as stipulated here, i.e. to contact finalists and to identify contestants online in the manner that they choose.

How We Decide?

  • Over the course of April, we will publish the entries we receive. ApartmentTherapy.com readers will vote for each submission using the patented AT.com polling mechanism.
  • Our panel of judges will then select five finalists from among the reader's obvious favorites, and each finalist apartment will be professionally photographed.
  • The finalists will be announced during the first week of May and presented along with the new photos and our judges' comments.
  • Final smackdown voting by readers will determine three prize winners!
