Because we've never accepted that a lack of space is fatal when it comes to creating an inspiring home and nothing thrills us more than the hand-made home or the stylish studio wedged into an urban crevice.
What?
The Smallest, Coolest Apartment contest is a contest for all small apartments and homes in the world, under 650 square feet (60 square meters). We are seeking the most ingenious and beautiful 160 submissions along with all the tips and resources we need to maximize our own homes. (Contest prizes may only be redeemed at a DWR in the United States. DWR will not ship merchandise outside of the United States.)
Who?
To be eligible, your entry must be your primary residence and you must have designed it.
Submit
- Name/online persona
- Location
- Size of home
- Type of home (studio, 1-bdrm, etc)
- Pitch: "Why is your small cool?" (100 words or less)
- Your favorite element in your home
- Your favorite resource
- 3 digital photographs (max!) (With description of photo as name of file ie. streetfacingwindow.jpg)
- Floorplan
- A Mailing Address (so we can send you a prize)

Deadline
All entries should be received no later than midnight Monday, April 16th
Criteria?
Readers and judges are asked to evaluate each submission for excellence in these three areas:
Efficiency Innovative use of small space to maximize livability.
Aesthetics Beauty and stylistic achievement in Decor.
Special Challenges Creative problem solving in dealing with adverse conditions.
Scheduling
- The best 40 submissions from each region (at discretion of site's editors) will be posted (2 per day) from April 9th through May 4th. Readers will be able to vote on each entry for 3 days from the time the post goes live.
- Voting ends on May 6th at midnight.
- Votes will be tallied by AT staff and the top 4 entrants in each region will be notified on May 7th. These 16 semi-finalists will be asked to resubmit their entry with additional photos and additional text by May 10th.
- During the week of May 7th, AT will post 4 honorable mentions, one selected by each of 4 judges.
- The 4 semi-finalists in each region (16 semi-finalists in all) will be posted online in their respective region on May 11th, May 14th, May 15th and May 16th. During this time, readers will have the opportunity to review and comment. The judges will review and take into account all comments when making their final decisions.
- Judges will determine a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place, irrespective of geography from the 16 national semi-finalists.
- The finalists will be announced at our Smallest Coolest Contest parties on May 17th.
Official Measuring Procedures
Multiply the longest length and widest width of your apartment to get
your gross square footage (this includes closets, bathrooms, etc).
Next, subtract any volumes that lay outside of your apartment such as
common stairways, halls, or other apartments.
