Q: Is anyone able to tell me some information on this chair? I scored it from a friend's parents, in a neglected state with the foam disintegrating. I had it re-upholstered in a purple vinyl with pearlescent sheen. I hope I haven't committed a design crime with this choice! I think it looks great but would love to know more about it. Please and thank you!

Beautiful job with that color!!
Eeerrrmmmm... no.
There's no crime in enjoying pearlescent purple vinyl if it pleases you. It will wear out or you will come up with another idea eventually; upholstery by nature is ephemeral. I would have made a different choice, but that matters not one bit.
When you and puppies/cats/neighbor kids/random acts of domestic happenstance have determined that it's time to redo, you might like something in the orange-y red family; not tomato-soup, something redder. The warmth of the wood color makes me thing that might work.
Personally I love that green color, but the purple looks good. Definitely more mod than mid century now. It looks like the bottom cushion had a bit of sculpt to it, or was that wear/disintegration?
It looks a lot like some danish mid-century teak furniture my parents have; no one would think it was out of place were it next to some of their stuff.
As for a design crime, who cares? It's your house, your chair, your butt. Make those things happy first, worry about us (or design history) later.
My son and his wife have a similar chair, some kind of MCM Danish modern teak thing, and they replaced the very worn scratchy bluish fabric with black leather. Looks gorgeous and is very practical. Unless it's summer and you're wearing shorts. Your chair looks great and very comfy. Love the colour.
Oh I think you did a fabulous job.
Another vote for Danish here. Were there any stickers or markings on the underside of the chair? That might give a clue. It looks great.
It looks great with the new fabric and I'm happy you didn't do anything with the wood.
It definitely looks Scandanavian (Danish or Swedish) Modern.
i nearly punched my monitor when i read "purple vinyl with pearlescent sheen" but it does kind of work.
What's that the kids say now, You Only Live Once? Why NOT recover a chair in pearlescent purple vinyl?! Looks fab.
Wow! It is lovely. Usually I don't like teak furniture because of the lines. However the purple really emphasizes the colours in the wood.
Nice color, interesting fabric choice. But they did a great job on the chair. Just curious, would you mind sharing how much the re-upholsterer job cost and in what part of the country? Thanks
You took this chair from "probably matches everything in the room and doesn't stand out at all" to "MOST AWESOME ITEM IN THE ROOM!"
I love it! I also would be curious for the cost of getting this reupholstered.
Both "vinyl" and "purple" made me think, "BLAARGH!" but as so often happens in AT, the result is much more wonderful than I had pictured. Nicely done. Hope you find the answer to your question of origin.
I don't like it but if you do, that's all that counts!
Now we have rules against purple vinyl? LOL. I can't keep up!
I love what you did! It looks great to me!
Who cares what anyone else thinks (though apparently you do), so long as you like it! If it ever leaves your hands whoever gets it can recover it as they like. Considering it needed to be recovered in the first place, what's the harm? If this theoretical person dislikes purple vinyl so much, at least they can feel less obligated to just hold on to a more neutral upholstery job simply because it's in decent condition.
I like purple, can't tell if I like this purple. Leaning towards not, due to the sheen. Would probably be more into a non-pearly faux croc/snake/whatever-skin purple vinyl. XD
Looks more of a sapphire blue with a hint of purple on my monitor. Looks great & a great find. If it'd been flat out purple, then I would have thought "yuck".
Nice! Thought it was going to be tacky but great job. Don't fret.
The purple makes the warm tones in the wood pop out - nice contrast. I like it.
Anyway, consider this couch, which is similar in style to your chair--teal naugahyde. So really you're not far off, anyway.
thank you to all who commented (both yays and nays). i live in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and i had the chair redone at Princess Perfect at 963 Pape Ave. just north of the Danforth. check out their website http://www.princessperfect.ca
Owner Lisa Jo and her team are fantastic to work with...fun and friendly. The labour costs were $400.00. Real Professionals! i cant recommend them enough. My couch is going in next month for its remodel. We're gonna change it quite a bit and i cannot wait!
