Dude, please lay off the iPhone filters.
Due to Instragram - it is a bit difficult to see the actual use of color in this room...what is the point of the contest if you use filters on your camera to generate false impressions of the room?
Agree with previous posters. I was reading this and thought why is this in a colour competition when the photos are filtered so heavily.
Anyway, it looks like a nice apartment. For some reason I had a feeling it was from Toronto...
I like the industrial look of this space. This is kinda the same look we are going for in our family room. We have the same color palette. Dark browns, blacks, greys, and off-whites.

Its very nice but totally masculine.
Looks like a great spot, but I'm with the earlier posters.. sort of hard to tell what the colors are due to instagram.
Love your site / place! Thanks for the comment (It's my place).
Totally agree with you, but the main image actually doesn't have any filters :)
Totally agree with you, but the main image actually doesn't have any filters :)
Nice place, but not very colorful.
Great space, Sean! I love the openness and the carefully curated deco.
Would like to know more about the clock. Good use of the Edison bulbs (if they're connected to a dimmer). Valid points by others about not actually seeing the palette choices in action.
This place is incredible! Fantastic mix of old and new. I don't think there's a lack of colour, or a need for more at all - the accent pieces are so prominent and unique, they bring flavour and colour to the room on their own.
I also don't think the filters make it hard to see what the actual colours are - all they're doing is highlighting the colours!
I can see the palette choices in the main picture. It's a well-decorated space, with a very tightly constrained color palette. I'm digging the rustic masculine look, and I'm very jealous of your coffee table.
Good feel
This really isn't presented to best advantage here. Would you be allowed to resubmit your entry with more photos that more accurately represent the color pallette?
I think instrgram photos should mean disqualification to be honest. Heavily modified photos make this kind of a joke
love it. as a geographer and restoration hardware aficionado i am really loving your space.
Hey all, just an FYI, Apartment Therapy approved all of my photos. Not sure why there are so many people being so negative. If you don't like the photos then just don't say anything! Is this not a friendly contest?
Hey Sean, congrats on the posting! I also entered the contest this year and I'm excited to see another Torontonian made the cut. I think your place looks fabulous and well styled. It would seem from the comments that many people share my opinion. Focus on the positive- I think the only negative comments seem to be wondering whether AT should allow filters that may mute colours in this particular contest. In your case, the sepia filter seems to add to the vintage vibe but I can see both sides. Good luck!
Love your windows!
Wow. This room is stunning. Looks like it came right out of a magazine. Nice work!
Holy bananas, I LOVE your space! It has great bones and I love the natural colour palette. When I move to TO, can I move in? haha.
You're right Sarah. This SHOULD be in a magazine! I would love to see before and after photos.
Very cool place, but I don't have a sense of the colors for this contest.
Sean, love your space. If you don't mind sharing, what kind of coffee table is that please? Is it some kind of farm cart?
what is the big deal about the pictures?! I can see the colors just fine in the 1st photo. The walls are light-you clearly see the color of the black leather couch, wooden floors and tables....the place and photos look great!!!
@rentbent06 - You're awesome!
Hey Sean,
I wasn't trying to be negative, I dig your space. But since this is a colour competition it seems weird to me that they would allow photos with the various filters you've applied to your photos. It's not a photo editing contest, and the filters actually distort the one aspect people are supposed to vote on - colour.
Again, you have a really nice apartment.
Nice place, but I can't vote for it. Like other's have said, lay off the filters.
I love this room.
Agreed, but there is clearly no filter on the first photo, which displays the entire room, and in the contest details, it clearly says the others are just addons to your main image.
It's kinda sad that so many people on this thread are so negative, when the simplest way to express that you don't want to vote for an image, is to just not vote. I don't understand why people need to be negative, I thought the members of this site were more of a welcoming group, but it doesn't appear to be... upsetting especially when AT had to approve all photos for the contest, should that mean you would comment to them, and not the entry?
OMG...those windows, that coffee table, that map, that eye test chart, that clock. LOVE!
Can I live here? It's beautiful!
Sean, with the number of favorites your room has, I'd say people in the AT community have very positive feelings regarding your submission and style. :)
You are quite right that if filters were against the rules or spirit of the contest, AT wouldn't have posted your entry.
Your loft looks great!
i love this place, when can i move in? i actually would really love a house tour of this place.
this is easily my favorite room in the contest. i get what everyone is saying about the filters, but whatever. you can tell the color scheme in the first one and imagine it in the others.
and i'd love to hear where your big mirror & antiqued map are from :)
@cdica002 - Firstly, you rock! I've been really lucky with almost 70% of the things I have in my place, that i was able to find here right in Toronto. Do you live in the city?
I'd have to agree with a previous commenter, that I had a feeling this was in Toronto before seeing it was. What building are you in? I'm a curious Torontonian.
Nice pieces in the space--the couch and Eames DSW chairs be my favourite.
Im sorry, but for all of those negative comments, the first image has no filters, the other images are impressive, and sad but true, it might be a contest but for international entries there is no price other than exhibition on the site, these are not eligible to win the National contest prizes. Even tho I'm from Costa Rica and I'm also going to participate just to show off my apartment :P
Kudos for your place, really lovely and inviting!
Sean, I think people just want to see your great apartment just a little more clearly. It's a fantastic space, I have to agree with the other posters, I think you could show it off even better au naturale. Yes we can see the true colours in the first image, but why should we have to try to imagine them in the other images, why can't we just see them? No need to gild the lily - your home will look just as good - if not better - without any instagram trickery.
Love your space! Can I come for a coffe please?
An intelligent person must live here. It's so sophisticated.
Nicely done! Liking the space, the vintage items and how it all comes together. Where in Toronto do you find these vintage pieces?
Love the styling, and I *think* I like the palette, but I can't be certain thanks to Instagram filters...would have had my vote for sure. Maybe an UN-filtered House Call or tour in the future?
awesome. understated and tasteful. you got my vote. love the sofa. where is it from?
So where do you live in TO? Cuz I would love to live in your building. lol I love those windows. And the place looks great.
nice
LOVE the map and overall look of the room, paired with a great Mac setup. Very jealous!
Looks great Sean!
Very cool! I love what you put together!
The extra large windows really make the room.
Like it... very man cave!
Sean this is truly Awesome with the old radiators and the leather sofa. Great job:)
I live in Toronto. There are a tonne of shops in the core to buy vintage pieces. Both places where your pieces might costs thousands, and places where you might pick up a winner for 10 bucks. It's one of the benefits of living in an international city that is also the condo capital of North America.
Lots of stores that cater specifically to small spaces as the condo market in Toronto has exploded in the last 10 years.
Thanks everyone!
This space is absolutely amazing! I'm in love! I was always told if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all- maybe not everyone was raised with manners?
I am delighted, Masterpiece Sean!
VERY cool place, but I can't see any color worthy of being a contest like this.
Sean, this is expertly done. Don't listen to the negative AT posters - it seems to be a tradition here for posters to run with a single negative point until others are ready to scream. I looked at the images and did not even notice the filters - it just read "moody" to me and I liked it. (And if AT approved the pics, then that is AT's problem, not yours.)
I actually have a bigger issue with Canada being considered "International." Seriously? I know, I know, it's a different country but our cultures are not that different, especially when it comes to decor. I don't feel the decor styles are distinguishable in terms of "Canadian" or "American," but I do think style changes from city to city, just as much between SF and NY as between NY and Toronto or Toronto and SF or Dallas. Chicago, Miami, etc.
I know if the category were "North American" then there is the problem of Mexico, which to me is International - such a different culture - so I don't really see an answer to the problem. I just know that when I click International I expect to see tours that don't look they are in the US.
None of this makes me love Sean's place any less - it's fantastic, regardless of category.
Seeing this makes me feel like I live in a beige cave. :)
