Sometimes the best solution for a small space is to go big. That was definitely the case when we moved from an open, loft-like condo to a small, floor-through cottage. Suddenly, even our "apartment size" sofa and compact chairs looked cramped. After enough house guests bruised their knees on the edges of the coffee table, we decided it was time to rethink the layout.
But instead of searching for ever-more diminutive pieces, we went the opposite route and chose a sectional. The transformation was, well, enormous. Gone was the tiny maze of threatening corners. In its place was a soft, but streamlined, low-armed sectional with down-wrapped cushions and a washable slipcover that easily sits four to five adults, two kids, and a couple of pets. Sure, we traded in city sleek for beach cottage chic, but when two people can stretch out simultaneously for a Sunday afternoon nap, it's pretty sweet.
The trick to making a large piece work in a small space is scale. When shopping for a sectional, we looked for models with a depth of 35" or less and no higher than 34". We preferred armless or track arm models to keep the sight lines open and chose a fabric the same color as the wall so the sofa virtually disappears.
If you're considering a sectional for your small space, here are some great options in a range of price points. Most are configurable, making it possible to get a close-to-custom fit.

Nomade Express Slee...
I believe the $799 figure for the CB2 sectional is actually just for the loveseat.
the city sectional from Crate & Barrel is no bargain... the quality is not what I expect from C&B
and similary to above, the price is for the loveseat only
this is so helpful - actual measurements for something i have been thinking about changing in my small space - thanks!!!
ronee - what brand did you actually go with?
The furniture business is hurting so much right now, stores closing left and right (um, except for IKEA), you should be able to steal a great sectional (even a leather one) in any city if you go to a liquidator. Or come to High Point, NC after the furniture market week and pick up some samples for a song!
I have the Clark sofa/sectional. Living in one room it takes up a good bit of space - IMO. I've removed the smaller sofa and put it in storage.
The room feels larger now.
I'm failing to see what's "small space friendly" about any of these, per se. 35" deep and 34" high is still awfully big.
Joan in SB:
We went with the Alex II from Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams. It has a slightly deeper seat at 36", but I was able to come up with a configuration that fit perfectly in my space. The service at the downtown Boston store was wonderful, and the quality of the piece is excellent. We chose the cotton duck slipcover in white, which launders beautifully with a little Oxyclean! This particular configuration was just under $3000 and worth every penny.

Quoting prices for individual pieces of a sectional isn't a fair representation of the true cost.
When you add up the pieces the CB2 and C&B sectionals, you're spending close to $3000 for the configurations shown.
The problem with many of these sectionals is that the back cushioning is somewhat minimal. I opted for the Eq3 Morten as its big, bulky, and you have plenty of back cushion without the need for dozens of pilllows.
Chaise, chair, and corner for $1950 with upgraded fabric (polo slate).
aack! I'm dealing with HUGE furniture in a small apartment living room right now. Looking for something new, but really don't have much to spend.
Has anyone come across a nice (enough) retailer that might offer something for a little less cash?
I think Mitchell Gold Bob Williams is having a 20% off custom upholstery sale right now.
I purchased the CB2 Annex -- Love it totally. Added to the look with lamp and coffee table from IKEA, plus Flokati rug. It's awesome. Comfortable too.
Has anyone purchased from Gus? I really like the look of the Carter sectional, but wondering about quality?
thanks ronee! and bstage - good to know prices :)
I just purchased a sectional on sale from Jennifer's Convertibles for $399.00. The original price was $899.00.
I've been looking (and dreaming) of a sectional from jennifer...but alas, there are no stores in our area, and they are completely unwilling to deliver to the middle of iowa.
for now...it's hand-me-down couches, until i get the motivation to drive to another state to retrieve a couch.
I posted about this here before and received so many questions/comments that I'll say it again --
Macy's Corona sofa comes in a sectional setup.
They never seem to advertise it on their site and it was an absolute BEAR to special order from the factory, but they finally made it happen and its amazing.
I think more people should know about it. Its really a fantastic sofa.

@einnac - Did you purchase the Haney sectional from Jennifer Convertibles? I'm considering purchasing that sectional. How do you like it? At $399, I'm a little worried about the quality.
britwash- I've had the sectional for about 3 months and it is holding up fine. I live alone with two cats and it still looks good.
