Who was your favorite contestant from the contest?:
Although all the work in Lee's apartment stood out, I definitely enjoyed "Big Dog" the most.
A product of attending art school is being taught that dog or baby paintings are the most kitschy idea ever, yet this dog painting is great. I wouldn't mind having it hung up in my own apartment (with that exact wall color.) I'm a little disappointed he didn't make the final round.
What would you change if money was no object?:
I lived in a dorm for the last three years so the first thing I wanted to do when I moved to an apartment was paint the walls as many colors as I could: two pink walls, an orange room and a green room.

I only moved into my apartment last April and I already want to move to another; partly for an extra room to do my prints and paintings in, and partly to pick new wall colors and play around with patterns (next apartment I'm screen printing wallpaper patterns right to the wall.)
So were money not an issue I'd move to a new place and start again. But those 36 paintings will be hung right back up.

I still wish I could get a better sense of this whole room! I love the idea of a wall of paintings. The frames all have such a distinctive style, that I'd like to see how you work this into coordinating with the rest of the room. Great stuff!
The mix of frames and styles is great. Unfortunately, most of the art is mediocre. Would be better if all original.
Originally I bought the art at thrift stores/yard sales/flea markets in order to add painted areas to them and make them a little silly. But as I began hanging them on the wall I liked that they were all a little chintzy and decided not to change them. For example, the boy with the straw hat and blue background is actually a creepy paint by number I picked up at a flea market. He's holding a goose and crying. Totally an ugly painting but I really enjoyed it. Perhaps I should have said this in my pitch, but oh well.
Yea, I dont see the appeal in this entry either. It doesnt thrill me but Good luck.
Katie, have you seen that book Thrift Store Paintings...? It looks like its now back in print (click name for link). The stuff in there is so brilliantly bad... and the names they make up for the untitled ones are fantastic. Things like "man with no crotch sits down with girl." Great stuff.
I have a dog named Ren.
This reminds me a little of one of my favorite movies, "The Royal Tennebaums"
I love the art, the arrangement, the wall color, everything about it, Katie. It's funny, I totally understand the impulse to mess with kitchy art and then to suddenly decide to leave it as is in all its kitchy-ness. Rock on!
I love the wall color. Don't really like any of the art. I'm all for thrift store finds, but only if they're good finds. Wish I could see the rest of the room.
I think it's great. Creative, low-cost way to really make a room fun. Love the wall color and the variety of paintings and frames.
I think this wall is so fun...I keep going back to check out the different pieces. It reminds me of a friend who purchases portraits and declares them her "found ancestors."
I like the art above the bed so-o-o-ooo much beter than this wall. I'd rather have seen an eclectic mix of original art and photogtraphs than what's here. But a good effort (much more effort than many people make).
