Self Serve Compost

Self Serve Compost

We've always wished we could compost, but without a yard—and with New York City's notorious rat population—we'd long given up on the idea. That is, until this sign caught our eye...

`

It's located in our local park. The project is self-serve, run by volunteers, and is open on Saturdays from 9am to 12 pm.

There's a number of barrels set up that are marked either open or closed.

You can save your scraps all week, and then you add them to the pile. Afterwards, you can help yourself to the nutrient rich soil.

We did a little more research, and it turns out there's a number of composting centers around the city. We're so going back next Saturday morning. Does anyone else do something similar in their city? Have any tips?
