Name: Seth, Allison & Jacob
Location: Downtown Ventura, California
Built in 1928, this Spanish-style California bungalow is a few blocks from the beach and located in a busy downtown neighborhood. While the two-bedroom, one-bathroom house had a great open living/dining room with a wide arch in between, the galley kitchen in the back of the house was completely closed off.
After refinishing the original wood floors in the bedrooms and completely renovating the spacious back yard, we knew our next--and biggest--project would be the kitchen. We took out the dividing wall and completely stripped the kitchen down. We created windows and a glass back door and rebuilt the open kitchen in a completely new design. The outcome has opened up the house for entertaining, giving it a much more contemporary look, while at the same time maintaining the character of the nearly century-old home. Our favorite feature is that now you can see all the way through to the backyard from the moment you enter the house.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Love love love your dining room chairs
I'm in love.
More pictures!
I like what I see. Shots of the backyard would be great too.
Just Perfect!
love your kitchen. please share the living room/dining room paint color?
Lovely! It looks like a home. The white and grey theme in the bedroom looks great too.
great place! where did you get your living room rug? is it the light grey atlas rug from west elm? thanks!
so awesome!. where is that painting behind the couch from?
Nice spacious kitchen - looks like a good place to hang out (and cook) - a very nice renovation. I also LOVE that painting in the living room. It looks great. My only "oh no" is seeing the cupboard hung above the bed - I worry about earthquakes - but maybe I am just a paranoid San Franciscan. :)
Also, THANK YOU for submitting full room pictures instead of the usual vignettes of vases and out of focus art. :)
House Tour!
Great photos. Thanks for sharing them. Also, does that coffee table unfold? It looks like it has hinges.
ew. hate the desk in the living room.
Beautiful-one question though what happens when the bike tires are wet or dirty-
I can understand the need to store them somewhere but in plain site of the dining room is odd, especially when there seems to be a yard??

--How can you hate something you can barely see? And does it matter if you hate these people's desk? You don't have to live there or use it. This is someone else's home, unless you have a helpful suggestion, maybe you should keep your nasty thoughts to yourself.
Great place! What paint color did you use in the living and dining rooms?
Thank you so much for the kind words, everyone!
@tullymama: thanks, the white ones are IKEA and the end chairs are CB2
@Nephthys : the paint color is Porous Stone from Dunn Edwards
@sweet tea: the living room rug is from World Market (much cheaper than West Elm ;)
@terka27 & @tara1979: the painting is by Jessica Langley (http://www.jesslangley.com/) I got it from a gallery I used to work at.
@JamesG: yes, the coffee table unfolds to be quite large. it's from crate & barrel
regarding the bikes: we have had bikes stolen from our porch (even locked up) and they get way too rusted from the ocean air outside anyway. sorry that it bothers some of you. i'm sure my dog's paws are just as dirty as bike tires and we're not kicking him outside either ;)
Love your space and I think I recognize the kitche cabinets... Ikea Nexus yellow-brown?? My living room is currently full of flat packs with those cabinets. I can't wait until they're installed. Your pics make me even more excited for my finished kitchen.
I like the look and feel of your space. All except the bicycle tree. I understand the need for safe bike storage but I just think it detracts bigtime from your esthetic.
@LO: yes, those are ikea nexus yellow-brown cabinets. good luck with your kitchen! we know the flat-packs all over the house story all too well.
i love your couch where is it from
@katie2: we actually found the couch free on the side of the road two years ago. it was covered in a tattered chartreuse corduroy-like fabric and we just had it reupholstered. it's my favorite piece in the house!
I've been looking for a shoe rack just like that for my closet. where did you get it?
@loosethread: it's part of an ikea closet system. they have them in a couple sizes.
love the double curtains and curtain rod in living room. could you share where you got them from?
Wonderful. It's nice to see a neighboring town featured in AT! I live in SB, btw.
Love the decor. Kitchen makeover is awesome. Everyone...remember...Seinfeld had a bike hanging in his apt.
You have a lovely home, so bright and airy :)
also curious where the you got your kitchen floor tiles from? so clean and modern! thanks for sharing your space!
Wow, I never knew Ventura could be so cool. You've done an amazing job with the place. And I love the socal touch with those surfboards--I wish my boyfriend's surfboard looked as good in our apartment as yours do in your home!
bright + airy, yet sleek + cool - love the vibe. really digging your bedding + the art in the entryway. would love to see more!
i like the bike. It looks like real people live there. (which is a good thing!!)
@aarongroesbeck: the curtains are from IKEA and the rods are from JC Penny (nothing fancy here!)
um. I love it all. Modern, breezy and fresh.
It's alllll greatthat is, most of it is not quite my style, but it looks like a lovely home.
I was going to ask about the bikes myself, since it didn't seem like an obvious place to put them. I'm putting my (vertical) bike rack right in the corner of my entry, so my bike can get hung up right away rather than having to wheel it any distance into my apartment (I like to be barefoot at home). I can't tell for sure, but it didn't seem like there was a door to the outside very near where you chose to put the bike rack. Did you just not have anywhere else to put them, or maybe did you not have anything else to put in that corner? XD
I covet that kitchen. I'm sorry you don't have any outdoor storage for your bike. This place looks so upscale that the bike looks misplaced.
Absolutely gorgeous. Would love to know how you got the time display on your Imac - many thanks!
The work you have done to this bungaloo is just beautiful. It is calm and peaceful, and classy as well.
I wonder if the bikes could be stored in one of those home depot outdoor sheds. They are pretty reasonable, and you could secure with a really really good locking device. It is just hard to miss a big bike high up on a wall! when everything else is so so beautiful..................
Kudos......
I can't help but defend our bikes once more with this note: the Michelangelo Gravity Bike Rack was featured on Apartment Therapy just three months ago.

We loved it so much we bought it right away. We happen to think our bikes are quite stylish, so we like the idea of including them in the decor. I totally get that it's not for everyone though :)
@killermouse: Here's the screensaver on the iMac:

Full house tour please! Your home is a dream to me, and I think the bikes look great! I'm itching to see more. What is the square footage?
When (not if) you do a house tour could we please see inside the bedroom closet and a close-up of the kitchen backsplash. With the desk in the living room, I wonder what is in the second bedroom. I'd be a happy girl if I could see a floor plan and the bathroom and the backyard... must. see. more. Thank you for sharing!
Just lovely - looks like the kind of place I'd want to come home to. Would you mind sharing where you got your kitchen floor tile?
Not to beat a dead horse(or bicycle)....I understand the need to keep your bikes inside, but hanging from the wall is just....well,tacky, and so beneath the rest of your lovely decor.
Seriously? Properly wall-mounted bikes are tacky? I completely disagree! I think the entire space is cool -- airy, interesting, straightforward design, etc. And, in my mind, the hanging bikes add to the visual interest and definitely contribute to the lived-in and loved vibe of the house.
Okay, I'm late to this party, but AT posted the kitchen pix again today, so I'm checking out the post. Great house, for sure. Love what you did with it. And the Bike? LOVE IT! It adds to the beachy casual vibe. Who are all these haters? Let's call them people who are jealous of your beach lifestyle.
I know this post has been up for quite a while but I really need help finding chairs like those 2 CB2 chairs on the end. Does anyone know the model number or any other info on them?
I think these are the lynx and aren't made anymore but I'd love any chairs that were very similar to these
