Bogart 1942: "We'll always have Paris."
Big 2008: "I can build you a better closet....Welcome home baby."
At AT we all know that having a place to put your stuff is as important as your stuff itself (maybe more so...), so we were particularly pleased to see this pivotal scene between Big and Carrie transpiring over the need for a larger closet. That said, inquiring minds want to know....

Closets: Necessary, but not a deal breaker. Lack of counter space in the kitchen: Seek counseling.
Ditto above... although that closet is way not big enough for a simple girl like me.
With proper organization, a small closet can work large.
I'd rather have a large outdoor space.
Kind of a tangent, but regarding the movie, does anyone know what color blue paint she repainted her old place in? I loved it!
Okay, here's a question for you Sex and the City fans: What in the world did Carrie find attractive about Mr. Big, and vice versa? I thought the carpenter guy was the best catch.
Yeah - that was a good blue. But I think I preferred her old apartment layout and color scheme. The new one seemed a bit too designed.
Oh poor Aidan! After she broke his heart a SECOND time, I really could never like Carrie much.
the problem with a bigger closet is you'll just end up buying more stuff to fill it.
I vote for a bigger kitchen instead.
sigh... i suppose i'm in the minority here, but i'd like to see an end to the barrage of SATC posts on AT. i feel like my favorite home decor blog has been hijacked by SJP and her crew!
Bepsf - when I lived in NYC I had to make do with a smaller closet and yes, through amazing organization, I worked everything in.
But I have a huge closet now (so big that it has a window!) and it is waaaaay better. I love having everything nicely spread out, not having to rotate seasonal clothing and, perhpas most of all, not having to add additional furniture to the bedroom. I hate having too much furniture crammed into any space.
double sigh...lemonpie, I totally agree with you. I think I'm the only female in America who has no interest in SATC and I feel like there has been no escape from it in the last couple of weeks. Enough already...please?!
A bigger bathroom (with 2 sinks) will solve many marital and cohabitation problems.
i want Carson's Mom's closet!!!
does the window open so you can air it out?
I saw the movie with my sister last night. I thought the first half of it (at least) was completely absurd. At the scene where Big brings her back to the penthouse to see the new closet he 'built' for her, and he opens the door to reveal a closet comparable in size to some people's apartments, a white laminate heaven all backlit and everything, and everyone in the theater is ooh-ing and aah-ing, my sister and I, normally hyper-considerate movie theater patrons, simultaneously burst out into uproarious laughter.
And furthermore, if I had enough clothes to fill a closet like that, I'd be ashamed of myself.
the closet doesn't have to be filled. it can have a garment hung every six inches a la Mariah Carey's lingerie closet. if it's going to be huge then it is going to also be set up as a dressing room so you can put together outfits and actually get dressed in there.
bigger is certainly appreciated.
Her walls are Benjamin Moore 'Electric Blue'
Do you think that color would work as well in a real apartment?
can you get any more materialistic?
Stop with the sex in the city gig. its old, their old, they provide no value to human culture, and i had to sit next to my colleague this morning as she explained that as she saw this movie last night, there was a row of weaping, hopeless girls crying. beats the &*(& out of the me..but enough please. I could say something really in appropriate but its so in appropriate that...
I agree with all the SATC naysayers, enough already, but I must admit, an engagement closet is definitely better than a conflict diamond (assuming it was sustainably done)!
Big closets are nice (especially when they can double as a dressing room) but are hardly necessary. My new apartment has 2 tiny little closets, but an amazing kitchen and overall fantastic layout (2 out of 3 ain't bad at all, especially when faced with a small budget). With a good overall layout and some creativity you can make it work (although I don't have a crazy Carrie wardrobe...but then, how many people really do?).
My boyfriend and I are currently ripping out our old closets to make way for bigger, better organized ones for...wait for it...his clothes. It's not always the woman. That said, I would love Carrie's closet (and the pre-war wasn't too shabby either).
I'm glad I'm already married and live in suburbia with a walk-in closet.
The problem is, my clotheshorsy husband takes up as much room as I do. F'n Brooks Bothers!
Here's a helpful tip for all the people that don't want to read posts that have to do with Sex and The City...simply don't read them.
trixxie, lemonpie, & others i see this post through our collective viewing of movies which has a secondary purpose: to check out the sets, evaluate 'em and compare them to our new york apartments. so, a closet/dressing room is very sexy. this is about sets in the city.
"Sets in the city," love it!
Re: "they provide no value to human culture": umm, as opposed to the comments section of a SATC post on Apartment Therapy? Sorry, it's just too too funny...
Though I agree with those pointing out how absurdly unbelievable the SATC sets are, I'm afraid they're stating the obvious: the movie is a fantasy of life and love in the big city, and hardly seems to me to be claiming otherwise. Just think of all those crazy New York apartments and hotel suites from 30s and 40s films--they were gigantic, lushly appointed, and existed nowhere in real life. Critique the fantasy if you like, but critique it *as* a fantasy.
ahhh fantasy!!
**sigh**
True, Edieb. The Thin Man couldn't get much more unrealistic, and I love those movies. Great apartment, great 30s clothes, drunk as skunks all the time, and yet still solving crimes!
It's just a movie, although I have to say that it always makes me want to burst out laughing when younger colleagues think The Notebook and Cruel Intentions were seriously great movies (as in, destined to be classics). So I'm guilty, too.
I think posts like this are less about the actual show (SATC, I will probably only watch the movie when it comes out on satellite in the country I'm in) but just something in pop culture to get a discussion going. Like: so how do you like them big closets?
Personally, I think a lack of closet space could be dealt with by stand-alone wardrobes (whoever designed our apartment put in only one measly closet that doesn't have enough depth to hang anything, everything is at an angle, probably to save space, but crap, it's the ONLY closet the whole place, not even a storage/hall/supply closet!!). All you need is some wall space to put in your own stand-alone wardrobes and presto, more closet space and you can take it with you when you move.
Like others have pointed out, I'd rather have more counter and storage space in the kitchen.
I'm with michaelc on this one...this, and the movie are lame.
I must admit, I don't like SATC and I don't like walk in closets either. Complete waste of space for me. I don't keep enough clothes on hand to warrant a giant closet.
If you have a big closet, do you actually wear what's in there? How frequently? I mean, I wear pretty much everything I own every single week; except seasonal coats (all 3 of them) and 2 fancy dresses. Out of season clothes I adore and will wear again next winter are in a box on top of my closet, but most have long since gone on to good will.
What would I want instead? Kitchen drawers, kitchen cabinets, storage for games, crafts, toys, stuff I love. I'm so not a clothes person.
Rather have the space over my head... we can;t stand up straight in our bedroom/loft!
Hi, I really loved the new walk-in closet. Do you have any photos or recommendations how to desing a similar one? thnx
No one can forgot the funny scenes in this movie.... I enjoyed a lot when i watched the first show of this movie.
....
