Unfortunately, I think that came from either Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel. Ex-roommate had one....don't see it on the sites anymore.

That one is definitely Pottery Barn. I have the "cd rack" version, which I used as a mail sorter in my landing strip when I had a roommmate. I bought mine nearly five years ago--and even Pottery Barn stops carrying things eventually, so ebay or craigslist would be the best bet for that exact piece.

I think Cite in soho used to have them or some other industrial comparable.

okay - completely off topic - but those knives hanging high like that over the window are making me very uncomfortable. They are a huge hazard - it feels like one will drop any minute - despite the fact that I understand the laws of physics and magnetism :-)

Maybe the person who cooks in that kitchen is quite tall?

JoAnn Fabrics has a similar take on the metal racks... in bright citrus colors.. Orange, lime green - etc.

Oh my GOSH, I've been scouring the internet for this very thing. Well, actually I was hoping for a kitschy, vintage one, but at this point I'd take just about anything.

I HAVE IT! it was one of the first purchases i made when i moved out after high school. it was from pottery barn & i bought it on clearance for $30 in 2001. so, they probably don't have them anymore. have you tried writing the company & letting them know about the demand? also, i would check pb teen b/c they tend to have more metal, modern stuff. most of it is very, well, teen, but there are lots of locker styles & steel. & no, it's not from ikea.

here's the full story. my boyfriend is a grad student at berkeley, i work from home. he has a desk and an office, but, silly guy that he is, he likes to come home to work so we can spend more time together. problem is since our apartment is relatively small (grad student photographer = not exactly rolling in it), he doesn't have his own work area. as a result, he has taken over the floor around his reading chair, which means his papers and books cover a 5ft. radius around this chair. it's not that it's unslightly as much as it's not very conducive to efficient and successful work habits. he falls prey to "out of sight, out of mind", so his solution is to make it so that he sees everything at once. i suggested the magazine rack because it would get his papers off the floor, they wouldn't be completely hidden so he could still see/access them, and we could find something to mesh with our decor without making the actual papers decoration.

so, knowing all that, am i on the right track? any other suggestions? these have all been really helpful.

that should be grad student PLUS photographer. sorry. there are two of us.

i am short. and they are on a magnetic rack that i have to literally tug on to get the knives to come of it. have you not seen these before? they are in chefs' kitchens all the time. y'all are just being silly. :)

they don't fall off, trust me. that's what the rack is designed for.and shoul di be in there when an earthquake hits, i'll be more worried about the Bauer bowls up top and high tail it out of there.

and yes, it's an old pottery barn magazine rack i got many moons ago.
