Close-Up!: Holly's TV Cozy

Let's say you live in a small space. A small space where you see everything as soon as you walk in the door -- including the television, which you don't like looking at all the time. Yet because you live in a small space, there isn't room for a piece of furniture in which to hide the television.

In our house tour, Holly's Sense of Simplicity, Holly made a cozy to hide her TV.

We were reminded of it while reading little birds handmade, where Stephanie made one of white wool felt -- and linked to instructions on how to make one here.

And that reminded us that we'd first seen a TV cozy when we saw Maxwell on Mission: Organization -- he made one for some clients (see his post here).

Nope, not feeling it. I love the idea of hiding the TV, but to me, this actually makes the TV stand out more.

But I would like to know the source of that pretty lamp in the 2nd pic down.

In the moments after flat panel monitors became ubiquitous, I scored a tapestry-ish monitor "cozy" for a song. My intention was to use the pretty front piece for a pillow cover. As with many of my big ideas, this one was abandonned. Then I moved into a small place and in my efforts to simplify, I wanted to hide my TV - not just for aesthetics, but also for sanity. The abandonned project fit my 27" set perfectly. I "hid" the TV from myself and found I watched it less. Sure, the cover is almost as obvious as the set, but only worth a glance, rather than the mesmerizing taunt of the shiny flickering moving picture box.

Hmm - I agree that this seems like a rather awkward solution to the problem. You can still see the TV quite clearly, and having a square of fabric sitting on top of what is very obviously a TV stand filled with electronic equipment is even more clumsy.

Has anyone ever tried something along the lines of a fireplace screen to sit right in front of the TV instead? If you could find the right product, it would probably be more ornamental and less conspicuous.

A great idea always, I already have cozies for both my computer monitor and my sewing machine. It's just another way to add color and pattern to a home.

Hi Holly! I think your cosy is very cute. You like it and that is what matters the most. Besides, some of us would prefer seeing pattern over a big black tube.

BTW - The Blueprint magazine Editor-In-Chief had one in her NYC apartment, did you notice that in their current issue?
