While most of these are fantastic vacation houses, some of them are serious about maximizing the workout required to move around inside. To us this might seem to impede the flow of the home, and run counter to the idea of a relaxing space.

The Tokyo loft, above, is "based on the priciples of Reversible Destiny, which seeks to challenge the body and mind as a way to keep you on your toes." Indeed.

hmmm... i only see three houses with very minimal descriptions... it would be nice if at least SOME of these blogs would go into some detail. they are always so vage.

I agree with the above poster - where are the other 18 homes?
That being said - one of my fantasies is to have a climbing wall in my house. I can imagine the games with the kids now "Ok - the carpet is lava and you have to get down the hallway!" And we climb across the wall. Awesome.

One of those houses made the list because it's simply so excessively large. A lot of those houses don't seem like full-time living more than a vacation spot for self-admitted active people, or things like the treetop dining "room" are probably only used occasionally, like when there wouldn't be any squirrels running by or flying insects attracted to the table. It's not that high a climb.
It was certainly imaginative to create these homes, but it might become harder to manage living in any of the uber-challenge lifestyle structures if you are sick or hurt yourself. If you are laid up and someone has to wait on you because you can't even shuffle or limp from the bed to the bathroom or the sofa, you won't feel so smart then, would you? I guess if you have room for a basketball court and a rock-climbing wall inside, rainy days and wintertime could be no excuse for video games, but I see sunshine and trees outside that door!
I mean, use your imagination for your house to build in a lot of exercise if you want, but nobody is forcing you to drive right up into your garage and take whatever 14 or so steps to the recliner every day after work either and make your kids fetch you beer! Stairs and paths are everywhere there and on the way back too.

My aunt and uncle installed a climbing wall in their basement. They and their kids are quite fit! :-)

You have to wonder though, how some of them get their groceries...
