apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

SF Spring Cure: Week Four

3-31-curelogo.jpgHalf way done! A big congratulations is in order for everyone who's still hanging in there. Take fifteen minutes today to walk around your apartment and really look at everything you've gotten done so far. How does your place look, and more importantly, feel? We're guessing a lot better. This week's assignment list might be a little long looking, but don't fret - it's actually not that bad. And when you really take stock of how much you've already gotten done, we're guessing it will give you some new energy to move forward.

This week we clean out our outboxes, something that can really feel like a relief. Getting rid of stuff lightens your house both physically and metaphorically - you have both more storage and floor space and mental space.

Week Four Assignment (Deep Treatment):

  • Clean up living room and related closets
  • repairs are being taken care of this week
  • declutter books and all media
  • cancel 75 percent of all the catalogs you recieve
  • empty outbox this week
  • confirm what you need to increase or decrease color in each room
  • identify what you need to increase or decrease softness in each room
  • cook three meals at home this week
  • send out your invitations

Week Four Assignment (One-Room Remedy):

  • Begin shopping list and enter all prices into a spreadsheet
  • decide on the total scope of work to be done
  • consider hiring a professional organizer
  • visit a paint store this week to find samples

slow love shows how to make a great, functional landing strip when you have very little space

Things are going well here. We won't be able to follow the cure guidelines too strictly due to our concurrent bath remodel, but I've been enjoying getting at least one 'project' done each week. I love improving each area of our home while following the deep treatment. You never know where inspiration will strike! During last fall's cure, some of our biggest improvements happened in our bedroom when I thought I was targeting the kitchen.

Last week I tackled the coat closet, got rid of some things, and rotated the spring coats to within easy reach. We use landing bowls rather than strips, so mine got pared down to essentials.

This week I've already donated an enormous load of clothing to the Salvation Army. Whole Foods currently has a nice deal on tulips (20 stems for $12), so tulips are now making things more cheerful. Still on my to do list is sorting through media, primarily DVDs and CDs.

I am loving the cure. Although, I think I am in a good situation because I moved in right before we began so I had already cleared a ton of stuff out before moving in here.

I am going for white and cream colors with brown accents(my sofa and my bed spread). There are a few punches of color. I feel really good about my 80/20 color ratio.

My big dilemma is deciding whether I want to split my living area and my living area in my studio with some fabric that can be pulled to one side or closed off.

Do I embrace my 11x16 open studio by having an open floor plan or should I risk closing spaces off and risking a dorm-like look? hmm. decisions, decisions.

I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my head around the color rule. I think in some of the pictures up on flickr you can see that we have colored walls, gray in the bedroom, green in the entry, yellow in the kitchen and toffee in the living room, with white molding then a good 20 inches of white wall up to the ceiling. I feel that the cool white steadies the warm wall colors (the gray has a touch of yellow to it), making the overall feel of the room very balanced. But when it comes to taking out one item from the room, or establishing the color group of the room I'm stuck. Also a bit afraid to define the room for fear of being "stuck" with those choices.
