SF Good Questions: Suggestions for Bathroom Fans?

3-26-fan.jpgHi AT:SF,

I'm looking for a bathroom fan. Nothing special -- no light, no extra features. Just a fan. All I've found are plastic models that look cheap and ugly. The best so far is a paintable fan. Any ideas? Maybe something chrome? I tried restaurant supply websites, but no luck.

Thanks,
brittanykate

Anyone have suggestions for brittanykate?

This one has a light, but its innocuous and finished in chrome nickel:

Otherwise, why not just get a plain white Panasonic Whisper Quiet fan?

Maybe I'm weird, but I don't like the new quiet fans. This is rather TMI, but ... well ... frankly, part of the reason why I turn on the fan in the bathroom is to mask certain sounds as well as remove certain smells. A door can only block out so much. A fan with a bit of noise provides more privacy. That's one of the reasons why I haven't switched out the ventilation fans in my bathrooms, despite the fact that their covers are ugly. :D

What about some "chrome" spray paint? I've done that before, it's not beautiful, but it makes it less ugly.

Most bath fans have more or less the same mechanism for holding up the (generally plastic) vent cover -- a pair of springy wires that hold the cover tight against the ceiling. The plastic vent covers are definitely paintable.
You could try to make your own cover -- maybe by drilling or otherwise making vent space in a ceiling rose, and then painting it. Then attach the springy clips (perhaps scavenged from a cheapo vent cover).

But in any case, I'd strongly suggest getting a *good* bath fan. If you're going to the trouble to install it, spend the extra few bucks on a Panasonic (I've also heard Fantech is good). It'll move air much better than a cheapo fan, last longer, be quieter (if, unlike Nougat, you prefer that), and use less energy.

I also have to replace my bathroom fan but the current one is in the wall and I can't seem to find attractive units that can be put into the wall (as opposed to the ceiling). Does anyone have any experience with that?

I really like this one:

That site has a lot of stuff, some of it horrendous, some of it really nice.

Oops, sorry, I just now reread-- you said no light. Never mind!
