All-White Rooms

9-26-08 white room 1.jpgSometimes we see images of all-white rooms and we can't help but get the urge to wipe the slate clean; it just looks really peaceful and calm.

9-26-08 white room 2.jpgFor example, do you remember Victoria's kitchen redo? Even though we're huge fans of color, we have to admit that there are times when a white palette looks so much fresher, cleaner, brighter... just better. We're not ready to shirk off color yet, but we're definitely starting to become more open to the idea. What say you? Any all white rooms in your home?

If I ever win the lottery I'm moving to Chicago and buying a large apartment and doing it all in white.

I think it looks amazing, although I'm not sure I'd try it at home. Our bedroom is quite clear and light, but the light vanilla walls and birch furniture help making it cozier while still having that clean feeling.

All white rarely look good if there aren't difference in texture and tones of white. The white in the top two look so good because of the texture of the paneling and the window trim not mention the wood tones. in the bottom picture, the clear crystal of the chandler, the green of the plant and the nature wood table help make the white look crisp instead of sterile.

White is difficult to pull off unless you have a LOT of light pouring in. The white that looked warm and bright in my sunlight-filled kitchen looks positively institutional in my dark hallway. The key is to use it in the right place.

I had an all white bedroom. I thought it would be clean and serene. The truth is it felt cold and sober very depressing. So later I painted one accent wall bright blue and added colorful accessories. I'll never go back to all white, neutrals maybe but not ALL white.

Truthfully, all-white rooms give me the creeps.

My alma mater was rumored to have been built on the site of a haunted mental institution (actually, it was the site of a military hospital), so the white cinder-block walls only reinforced the rumor.

I didn't know of a single student who didn't cover as much of that blank wall space as possible.

I love all-white rooms. I miss the all-white apartment I used to have -- it was so tranquil.

I've wanted an all white living space for a long time. I tried to talk my husband into white furniture but he was adamant that it would never be in his house. So, we got black and it makes the room look very heavy. Last time I listen to him! I'm seriously thinking white slip covers . . . Hmm . . . he's gone for three days. I think I'll paint HIS beloved dark purple bathroom white. Then, we'd be more or less even, right?

I LOVE the look of all white, but agree you need various textures and architectural details (and natural light) to pull it off well. My bedroom is all white, with just three pops of color - bright quilted pillow shams behind the white ones and two of my favorite photos (framed in white), which both pull out the bright colors in the shams. All white makes most people nervous though (I used to have a white sofa and guests were uncomfortable eating or drinking on it), so consider the "welcoming" factor if you're contemplating all white for an area where you entertain.

I love the peacefulness of all white but find it very hard to maintain. We painted our old (beyond salvaging) floorboards white and that has brought the whole house to life. A bit of white is absolutely fantastic.
