Travelmate Mobile Fireplace

4-8-08 travelmate.jpgWe don't really get how it works, but man is it cool! Imagine taking this out for an evening in the park, or on a rooftop, or... well, the possibilities are endless. More info after the jump.

According to the website, the glass is held on by magnets, and is removed only to light the fire. An attached 1 liter tank of bio-alcohol provides the fuel, which is clean burning, so you don't have to worry about smoke. We were concerned about how you might have to stop the fire once it's started (as popping off some fire-licked glass sounds unappealing) but apparently the fuel tank is accessible from the outside, making regulating the flames a snap. The suitcase shape makes for stylish shlepping, too.

Available in Europe for about 1400 euros, though we don't recommend trying to bring it back as a carry-on.

I like it. Simple and useful!

I can think of all sorts of places this would be a nice touch.

Nice. This reminds me of some variation of hotpot stoves. Great for outdoors!

I'm guessing the on/off feature is probably a vent. No oxygen= no flame.

I love it... but at 1,400 Euros, a bit pricey!
I wouldn't want to pick it up by the handle after its been burning a while either.

I would think that the handle may get a little hot after a while...

Very awesome. Not sure about taking with me to the park, but I could see it in a lot of different rooms in my place.

I thought it was just for looks until further reading on the site. The fact that it generates heat makes it rather appealing... but not for that price.

I don't think the price is bad, especially if you think of it as your home's fireplace. It would cost waaaay more than that to install a fireplace in my house, or to buy most other freestanding models.

The only drawback is no s'mores.
