Winter Architecture by David Salmela

0219_salmela1.jpg

There's something comforting about those steep roofs blanketed in thick layers of snow. The Finnish-American architect, David Salmela, has winter architecture in his bones. He was born into a Finnish family and grew up in Minnesota. If you like his snowy exteriors shown up top, warm up with some of his works' interiors after the jump...

Salmela practices in Duluth, Minnesota, where he creates homes for "everyday people—not corporate executives, not art collectors, not style-conscious celebrities". Read more on Salmela in Residential Architect. And see more of Salmela's work on his blog. Photos by Peter Bastianelli-Kerze

Um, it's DULUTH, not "Deluth."

Otherwise, thanks for posting a feature that celebrates the upper Midwest and our glorious winters!

Reminds me of growing up in Upper Michigan as a boy...
...but the homes are much more attractive than the US Military Base Housing we lived in.

I like these houses but I wish the interior shots were taken in the winter as well. The light is totally different and the interiors may or may not seem too cool given the chilly outside. It would also illustrate the idea of this posting better.

I like the look of the house in the first picture, something amusing as much as something comforting and attractive.

I had the privilege of touring one of his recent builds during construction in Northern Michigan. (It's the leather sofa/beam photo above.) Really beautiful proportions and a feeling of spaciousness and coziness at the same time. And a killer sauna... requirement here!

FYI, his name is Salmela, not Samela.

Farmhousemoderne - wow, thanks for correcting the spelling of Salmela. I've corrected it in the text and title. How awesome that you had the opportunity to see one of the homes in person!

The contrast between the warm yellowish light and the cool bluish shadows in the top photo is beautiful.
