We've lived in some very interesting spaces since moving to San Francisco. From a 200 square foot studio to an attic/loft space with dormered ceilings that were 6'2" at their highest, it's been quite an adventure, spatially. But here's one we haven't tried--a very interesting floating home!
Joanna Borek is a San Francisco designer that has created the concept of the Tafoni Floating Home. With the premise that building on land takes up space (a challenge with an ever-growing population) and creates a sizable impact on the earth, she has designed a houseboat that has far less impact on the environment in which it resides.
The design is inspired by pebbles, waves, and tafoni. Tafoni is naturally occuring sculptures in stone (commonly sandstone). Thought to be the product of salt weathering, tafoni is often found along the Northern California shore. This "multi-purpose living pavillion" definitely has a futuristic appeal, and we love the idea of building a home that is contained in a small, portable container.

The idea of a modern houseboat I can go for...
...but the Giant-Earthworm-from-Dune body-segment shape and interior - Not so much.

Form over function. No, thank you.

There doesn't seem to be much privacy. Maybe there is a system of shades or drapes you could improvise, but it feels very exposed.

I wonder if I'd sleep better on a houseboat (floating home)? The openness is a plus for me. I hate enclosed rooms.

I've always wanted to live in a houseboat (or a tree house). There is something very cool about living in nature. What I like about this is the modernity of it, because too often, the tree houses and little cabins in the woods are too "patchouli" for me. The idea of living in modern luxury that is low impact and surrounded by nature is very appealing. How much fun would it be to have a nice dinner with family or friends while hearing the waves lap and seeing the city lights sparkling in the distance, maybe even feeling the gentle rocking of the motion of water.
